We have instances when RMAN is running and we see high contention for this wait event. Nice to know how the controlfile dump can be obtained. !! Comment by nicc777 on Getting to KNOW MySQL- September 8, 2008 Just a quick tip for TCP client connection if you are using RedHatCentOS: By default the mysql client application on these platforms connect to the DB with sockets. Normally this is not a problem, but sometimes you want to connect to a DB on another host over the network. In etcmy.cnf add the following line under the mysql section: protocol=TCP Another tip for when you view LARGE result sets on the command line. Comment by Nico on Getting to KNOW MySQL - post 2- September 8, 2008 Interesting post! I am a long time MySQL DBA (not certified) now getting back into Oracle. I just want to add one comment on the whole CLI vs GUI debate - a lot of my support happens while I'm not in the office, hence via GPRS or 3GHSDPA connectivity. Although our mobile networks (South Africa) "claim" over 1.8mbps speeds for HSDPA, you are lucky if you get 200kbps, and in many areas GPRS is the only thing your get. In this scenario, CLI is king. Comment by jan_bartos on Using chkconfig for configuring Oracle automatic startup and shutdown- September 8, 2008 Thanks for clarification. It seems that problem in my case was somewhere else. I needed to be able to run dbora script as root (not as oracle user). So I added all necessary variables first and then called dbstart or dbshut. Works like a charm. Comment by cwroblew on Getting to KNOW MySQL - post 2- September 6, 2008 When I was using Oracle years ago, I still had a pc client to access the database. In using a GUI client, some things are simplified, especially viewing table data and structure and adding columns on the fly and I don't have to remember SQL commands to add users. But the GUI client does have a SQL Editor where you can enter SQL statements to your heart's desire and they don't require that stupid semicolon I'm always forgetting in the command line. I use the SQL Editor a lot. There ishttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/database-solutio... Koopmann on Using chkconfig for configuring Oracle automatic startup and shutdown- September 5, 2008 Ok, have to put an end to this one. If you look at the dbstart script, it already has lsnrctl comands within it to start the listener. Please also take a look at : Oracle - NO listener.ora and NO tnsnames.ora Needed BUT, a test is worth a thousand words: Check to see if a listener is running: oracleludwig bin$ lhttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/database-solutio... Comment by jan_bartos on Using chkconfig for configuring Oracle automatic startup and shutdown- September 5, 2008 Nice post, but there is one important flaw in the oradb script which prevents it from functioning properly - as dario pointed out, there is no listener starting nor stopping.
