USDA Invests US $4M in Woody Biomass - September 16, 2008

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a request for proposals for programs to improve the utilization of woody biomass residue from forest restoration activities. The DOA plans to make at least US $4 million in grants available to winning proposals, with individual grants ranging from US $50,000 to US $250,000.

New Generation To Develop First Commercial Scale Biofuel Plant - September 16, 2008

Renewable fuels provider, New Generation Biofuels Holdings Inc. announced the signing of a site lease and a terminaling services agreement to locate their first commercial scale biofuel manufacturing plant at the port location of Atlantic Terminaling in Baltimore, Maryland.

Bacteria from Compost Could Provide 10% of UK Transport Fuel Needs - September 16, 2008

Often found in compost heaps, the bacteria that converts waste plant fiber into ethanol could eventually provide up 10% of the UK's transport fuel needs, scientists heard last week at the Society for General Microbiology's Autumn meeting being held at Trinity College, Dublin.

GreenHunter Achieves 65% Production at Biodiesel Refinery - September 15, 2008

GreenHunter Biofuels LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GreenHunter Energy Inc., announced on Friday that it had achieved 65% of nameplate production capacity (65% of 105 million gallons-per-year) at one of the country's largest biodiesel refineries located in Houston, Texas.

High Costs Could Prompt Premature End to Oil Production - September 15, 2008

Consider what's now happening at the major mining companies as a harbinger of what we can expect to see with oil production companies. According to a recent article appearing in The Wall Street Journal (link below), a number of mining companies are curtailing certain of their operations, in some cases shutting them down completely. The explanation, which at first blush seems strange, especially given the run up in commodity prices over the last few years, has to do with operating and investment.

Poet Gets Support from Iowa for Cellulosic Ethanol - September 12, 2008

Poet announced that the Iowa Power Fund has comitted US $14 million to Poet's commercial cellulosic ethanol project, Project Liberty. The project involves the transformation of a 50 million-gallon-per-year (MGPY) grain-to-ethanol plant in Emmetsburg, Iowa into an integrated corn-to-ethanol and cellulose-to-ethanol biorefinery and is jointly funded by Poet and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Expanded Biodiesel Plant Opens in Oregon - September 11, 2008

Pacific Biodiesel has announced that a five million gallon expansion of it's Salem, Oregon biodiesel production plant is now open. The Sequential-Pacific Biodiesel LLC (SQPB) plant has been producing biodiesel since 2005. The plant is expected to reach full capacity in November of 2008.

POET welcomes Iowa's support for cellulosic ethanol - September 11, 2008

POET CEO Jeff Broin welcomed the decision of the Iowa Power Fund to commit $14.75 million in POET's commercial cellulosic ethanol project. "One of the reasons we decided to build our first cellulosic ethanol production facility in Iowa is because of the state's deep commitment to renewable energy," Broin said. "This is an investment that ensures the state of Iowa will continue to be a leader as the ethanol industry expands to include cellulosic production."

Third POET Ethanol Plant Opens in Indiana - September 11, 2008

Today in North Manchester, Ind., POET hosted a grand opening ceremony for their 24th ethanol production facility. POET, the largest producer of biofuels in the world, was joined at the opening of POET Biorefining – North Manchester by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels and Cathy Gallmeyer, Director of the Lugar Northeast Indiana Community Service.
