Life on the Run

This is the world beyond Seattle's daily grind. "Trials of miles and miles of trials" are the stuff that bonds all runners together in an extended family of storied dreamers. This is their tale of the city, of Sunday 20-milers and 10k's and of marathons in far-away places.

Marathon Crashers - September 18, 2008

It's time for all the fall marathons! I actually really like this time of year because I find myself attending the Chicago, Marine Corps, and New York City Marathons!! I am miles away and obviously living out of a bag but there is just something about marathon season that makes me forget about hotels and airports. Plus. . ..Halloween in NYC is something a little less than a miracle. So many people have put the last 4-12 months of their lives on temporary hold training for these marathons and...

Finding a Running Partner 673 Miles Away - September 17, 2008

Running along the waterfront and over the Golden Gate Bridge and back this morning was different from runs past. The course was the same. The run start was the same. And the temperature was the same. The only thing different was that for the first time while in SF I actually ran with someone. So the long 16 mile to the bridge and back no longer seemed like a drag. While not in the tip top shape I'd like to be for running, and post Ironman, I was feeling good and decided to go for the run. And...

Parlaying into the Seattle Marathon - September 12, 2008

What's next That's the question I've been asking myself after completing the Ironman. While I could take the fitness I've gained and race Black Diamond triathlon this weekend or Kirkland the following week, I will unfortunately be out of town for both races. There is a triathlon in South Africa, but our travel schedule doesn't coincide with the race date. So what's one to do How about do what I can do to break that sub-three hour marathon mark that's been plaguing me for the past two years Hmmm.

2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run - September 9, 2008

Growing up I heard about a thing called a triathlon, an event that consisted of a swim, a bike and a run. Having watched a few of the major championships on TV, when I happened to find them while channel surfing, I instantly became hooked. In fact, my older brother purchased me an "Escape from Alcatraz" triathlon shirt during one of his trips to San Francisco more than 10 years ago. I still have it and use it as motivation. While a cool looking shirt, I have yet to wear it, as I feel I can't...

Training and Train's Ironman - September 8, 2008

It's been a hard last few weeks for the training logs. I had a rough 7 days of running while in China and then came back from the trip feeling horrible on every run. Somehow it turned around a little last week. A few of us ran the Super Jock N Jill Half Marathon recently and a few of us still think that only the devil himself could think up such a course! I usually run a touch worse than a recovering heart patient at this race and this year was no exception. I ran a minute or so faster than...

There's no place like home . . . - September 5, 2008

But it is sure nice when the weather welcomes you in a familiar format rainy and chilly. Upon my arrival in Madison, WI, I was treated to a familiar site as of late rain. A good thing, I'm not sure, but the cooler temperatures are a nice surprise. With varying weather conditions almost daily (yes, I've been checking the 10-day forecasts every day 10 days out) there is no telling what will take place on Sunday. They say 69 degrees, sunny with a chance of thunder storms in the late afternoon. I.
