Angelblog :: Angels Drop First to Division Rivals - July 2, 2008

The Angels allowed the A&8217;s to gain a game on their first place standing by dropping to them on Monday, 6-1. The Angels met with hitting coach Mickey Hatcher before the game, but that apparently did no good as the offense put up just one run on four hits off Greg Smith&8217;s complete game victory for ...

Bluebird Banter :: We Had Some Massive Nights - Game Thread, Jays at Mariners - July 2, 2008

I don't know where all these Hold Steady references keep coming from  Something about summer, I guess.  Doc Halladay once again proved why he is one of my favourite all-time players.  He just threw and threw and threw, carving up Seattle to the tune of a masterful 4-hit shutout.  The Jays provided just enough offense, with the 4 infielders (Scoot, Eckstein, Scott Rolen, and Lyle Overbay) contributing while the rest of the lineup mostly...

Tiger Tales :: Mid-season FIP update - July 2, 2008

Today, I'll continue my mid-season analysis of the Tigers looking at Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP or FIP ERA). FIP is a measure of how well a pitcher performs in events which he can control without the influence of fielders - home runs, strikeouts, walks and hit batsmen. The formula is (HR13+(BB+HBP)3-K2)IP, plus a league-specific factor added to make it equivalent to a real ERA.

Extra Bases :: Rays threatening - July 2, 2008

With a one-run lead, the Rays are trying to get a cushion in the eighth. With walks to Carlos Pena and Cliff Floyd (removed for pinch runner Jonny Gomes), the Rays have two men on with two out in the inning. That walk to Floyd brought in Manny Delcarmen to pitch to Dioner Navarro.

Extra Bases :: That's it for Garza - July 2, 2008

Matt Garza did his teammates proud, with seven innings of five-hit, one run ball. And that one run was unearned. Garza also struck out three batters. He came out for J.P. Howell, who just struck out Jason Varitek on a particularly ugly (pathetic) swing.

Extra Bases :: Sox go down - July 2, 2008

That's it for tonight. The Rays are now assured of winning this series over the Sox, with the sweep on the line tomorrow. It also means that the Rays will finish the series in first place in the AL East, as the Sox head to New York for Thursday's game. Despite Alex Cora's risky -- very close play at second base -- double down the left field line, it ended at 3-1. Grant Balfour struck out the other three batters in the inning, all swinging.

Extra Bases :: Rays get another - July 2, 2008

Now that clearly jazzed up Dioner Navarro. Navarro pumped his fist after rounding first base on a single to right field, which scored Carlos Pena with the third run of the game for the Rays. He looked into the dugout after his fist pump, perhaps getting some props from his teammates. The Sox just have the top of the ninth to come back from their 3-1 hole, or the Sox will be forced to head to New York in second place in the division.

Extra Bases :: Getting out alive - July 2, 2008

Grant Balfour, though he walked Manny Ramirez to load the bases in the top of the eighth, also got himself out of that sticky situation. Balfour induced a groundout from Mike Lowell to shortstop to end the inning. That keeps the score at 2-1, heading to the bottom of the eighth. Jason Varitek stays in to catch, with Craig Hansen on the mound in relief of Tim Wakefield.

Extra Bases :: Gem of a play - July 2, 2008

Evan Longoria just made the play of the evening -- and probably the series -- grabbing a probable double off the bat of Alex Cora down the left field line. He dove flat out, and sent a strong throw across the diamond to beat Cora for the third out of the inning. Still 2-1, Rays.
