"He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God." ~Aeschylus, Agamemnon

Comment on Ike Brought Us Together by Viola Jaynes - September 22, 2008

Jimmy - there is a lot to be said when people come together when they are on the same ground. Suffering seems to do that for folks. There are always those who go against the tide, but many have shown a remarkable desire to be thankful and kind. Thank you, Jimmy, for your good wishes. Sandy - I could not have said it better. I have found myself being amazed...and then amazed that I am amazed. Best to you!

That post gave me chills and then brought tears to my eyes. I am so amazed by how good people are, and then I am amazed I am amazed. We have it in us, to be sure. I love the signs on the lawns. The presence of humor is always a sure sign of strength, I think. Ike can take our stuff away but not our souls. You and your family and neighbors demonstrate that.

Great post, Viola. Wonderful insight into the human condition and how hard times bring people together. I guess that is one reason why old military buddies hold each other in such high regard. We faced the fire together and it linked us inextricably for life. Let us hope that some of the same sentiment grows in your neighborhood. Peace and good will to your family and your neighbors.

Comment on The Evening Of Hurricane Ike by Viola Jaynes - September 19, 2008

Thank you, Jimmy! It is about 10:35pm at the moment and we just received our power back as we were getting ready to go to bed. We were one of the last ones here in The Woodlands. However, I am certainly not complaining. You should see some of the damage that has taken place around here. Some people have lost so much. It is amazing to me, and I will write a post on this, just how much folks have helped each other and how high their spirits really were. I was very impressed indeed.

I want to let my readers know that as of today, our part of The Woodlands still has no power. We should be coming up by tomorrow. Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers.

I agree with you, Sandy. The Internet has truly been amazing. I was so surprised over that e-mail from this gentleman. We really do live in a small world.
