ColdFusion Backup & Disaster Recovery License - July 10, 2008

Adam Lehman mentioned this the other day on a mailing list (and now has blogged about the CF 8 EULA change); the ColdFusion license changed in v8.01 and it now allows you to have a copy of CF installed for a warm backup server. From the ColdFusion 8 EULA (PDF): 2.3 Backup and Disaster Recovery. Licensee may make and install a reasonable number of copies of the Software (ColdFusion) for backup and archival purposes and use such copies solely in the event that the primary copy has failed or i

Combine and compress your javascript files: Scriptalizer.com - July 10, 2008

After creating a custom tag and minifier component (using YUICompressor) I decided it would be a pretty neat service to offer to everybody.  Last night I scrounged up a website and called it Scriptalizer.com.  If you want to test what cf_scriptalizer does to your javascript before you actually use the tag, you can try out the generated script provided by Scriptalizer.com.   NOTE: All source files uploaded is immediately deleted once generated.

Best Practices for Model-Driven Software Development - July 10, 2008

I just wanted to point out a nice posting at InfoQ. In the posting, Sven Efftinge and his colleagues reiterate some good best practices if you're getting started with code generationmodel driven development. Sven also presented a great hands on tutorial on openArchitectureWare at Code Generation 2008 last month in Cambridge. For anyone who is serious about Domain Specific Modeling, along with MetaEdit+, it's one of the core toolkits you should evaluate. It's Eclipse based and while

Monitors: How Big is Big Enough - July 10, 2008

I used to use a 19" LCD monitor with my MacBook, but after moving to a 17" MBP it hardly seems worth plugging in for the nominal extra screen real estate. However, now that I'm back in the office (fairly) full time I am considering moving to a larger monitor for more efficient coding. Primarily I'm considering a larger screen, although I'm also open to multiple screens (especially if I could map them to various spaces in Leopard. So, a couple of questions. Firstly, how big is big enou

Scared about Google tracking you - July 8, 2008

I know that Google's privacy policy has been in the news recently. It even prompted Matt Woodward to get off of Gmail. I never bought into the Gmail thing. Yes, I do have Gmail account, but mostly because I signed up for a Google account for analytics and other things like Google Groups. I never use it (it just collects junk). Recently, I stopped using Google for search because I didn't want them to "save" my search history (even though I turned off search history in my account)...
