RODERICK T. LONG: Socialism Is Here At Last! - July 6, 2008

cross-posted at Austro-Athenian Empire I&146;ve finally finished posting Francis Tandy&146;s 1896 individualist anarchist work Voluntary Socialism. Chapter 9 defends the occupancy-and-use theory of land ownership, and criticises the Georgist alternative. Chapter 10 is a critique of intellectual property. Chapter 11 criticises the assumption that workers&146; cooperatives would dominate the post-capitalist economy. Chapter 12 takes on the postal monopoly. Chapter 13 defends education...

STEVEN HORWITZ: Happy Birthday to US - July 4, 2008

Some very brief thoughts of mine on the day over at Western Standard, a very nice and quite libertarian Canadian site. Cross-posted at The Austrian Economists.

SHELDON RICHMAN: Getting Rights Wrong - July 4, 2008

It's the Fourth of July, the day we ought to contemplate and rejoice in Jefferson's radical declaration of the "self-evident" truth that all individuals are equally endowed with "certain unalienable Rights, ... among these ... Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Alas, the day cannot be one of unmitigated joy since we have again been reminded that the purported protectors of our liberties have little understanding of those rights. We thus live under constant threat from the very people.

SHELDON RICHMAN: From Rebels to Sheep - July 4, 2008

On this July 4th I observe with shame this news from my town, Conway, Arkansas, as reported in the Democrat Gazette this morning: A con artist posing as an undercover drug cop struck twice in Conway within the past week, stealing hundreds of dollars from unsuspecting victims. Conway Police Department Lt. Danny Moody said the man flashed a fake badge and told his victims to turn over their money. The cash was involved in a previous drug deal, he said, and may be contaminated with &8220;drug.

DAVID T. BEITO: Welcome Ralph Raico! - July 4, 2008

Liberty and Power is honored to welcome Ralph Raico as a member. Raico is professor emeritus at Buffalo State College and a legendary figure in the history of libertarianism. Ralph is a fine scholar, dynamic speaker, and long-time friend. Among his many accomplishments, Raico (a former student of Ludwig Von Mises) translated Mises&8217; book Liberalism into English and served as editor of the New Individualist Review. During the 1960s, the Review, which had both Milton Friedman and...

DAVID T. BEITO: The McCainObama Echo Chamber - July 3, 2008

In the last two days, both Obama (here) and McCain (here) have called for a bigger military. Here is what Obama said: But we need to ease the burden on our troops, while meeting the challenges of the 21st century. That&8217;s why I will call on a new generation of Americans to join our military, and complete the effort to increase our ground forces by 65,000 soldiers and 27,000 Marines.

DAVID T. BEITO: The FBI Chief Laments Heller - July 1, 2008

Robert Mueller, the director of the FBI, is upset about the Heller decision. No doubt flanked by armed FBI agents, he declared that &8220;weapons harm people, and more often than not they harm the people carrying them.&8221; It is understandable that Mueller would think this. It was his agency, after all, that gave us the legendary Lon Horiuchi, a graduate of the Barney Fife School of Marksmanship.

RODERICK T. LONG: You Need Some Blood On That Resume - July 1, 2008

cross-posted at Austro-Athenian Empire So the pundits (including people who are usually smarter) are howling because Wesley Clark made what ought to be a patently obvious and uncontroversial observation: &147;I don&146;t think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president.&148; This, apparently, amounts to &147;belittling&148; McCain&146;s war record. Huh Even for those who regard McCain&146;s war record as a valuable achievement, how is it...
