Crisis Deepens as Big Bank Fails - IndyMac Seized In Largest Bust In Two Decades - (Found July 15, 2008 )

IndyMac Bank, a prolific mortgage specialist that helped fuel the housing boom, was seized Friday by federal regulators, in the third-largest bank failure in U.S. history. IndyMac is the biggest mortgage lender to go under since a fall in housing prices and surge in defaults began rippling through the economy last year -- and it likely won't be the last. Banking regulators are bracing for a slew of failures over the next year as analysts say housing prices have yet to bottom out.

This was supposed to be John McCain's week to re-re-launch his campaign, this time with a tightly focused message about the economy and how he plans to fix it. He had a nicely staged debut in Denver, even if the experts quickly demanded to know how he could preserve George Bush's tax cuts, stay in Iraq and yet balance the federal budget by 2013. McCain Campaign Quickly Scrubs Website of References to Its Allegedly Outed Alabama Campaign Chair - Another One Under the Bus - (Found July 15, 2008 )

The John McCain campaign scrubbed its website today to remove all references to its Alabama campaign chairman, Attorney General Troy King. King, who is known for extremist views on religion and who has frequently made homophobic statements, including calling gays the downfall of society, is the subject of rumors that his wife recently discovered him having sex with another man.

There He Goes Again - (Found July 15, 2008 )

This has been a week in which the stock markets lurched sickeningly downward. The treasury secretary had to swat away rumors that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the pillars of the mortgage business, may be crumbling. Oil prices spiked, again. Airlines cut schedules and raised prices, again. And the best that could be said about one of the nations biggest companies, General Electric, was that it didnt do worse in the second quarter than Wall Street had expected.
