Planet MozillaPlanet Mozilla - http://planet.mozilla.org/David Boswell: Supporting The Mozilla Community- July 14, 2008 Id like to post some thoughts about what the Mozilla Foundation could be doing to support the existing community (or communities). Thinking about how to expand Mozillas scope to new audiences is certainly important, but I dont want this discussion about the Foundations future to overlook the community as it is today. Here are a few things that I think the Foundation should consider doing Grants and Donations The Mozilla Foundation is already supporting the existing community by providing...http://davidwboswell.wordpress.com/2008/07/14/supporting-the-mozilla-community/ Calendar: Calendar Community Testday On Thursday, July 17- July 14, 2008 Our next test day will be held on Thursday, July 17th, and we need your help to find regressions and bugs! I want to give you a short description how a test day proceeds:We usually try a mix of Litmus and ad-hoc testing. Ad-hoc testing is testing where we attempt to use the product like a 'normal user' to find any issues that crop up along the way. We also try to make the application break by doing unexpected things - mixing up events, mails, tasks, calendar types etc. This is also called...http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/calendar/2008/07/calendar_community_testday_on_3.html Mitchell Baker: Mozillas Magnetism- July 14, 2008 One of the great things about Mozilla is that periodically Ill be thinking about how to get something done and then Ill look up and find someone else has already done it, and often gone further with the idea than I would have. Dave Eaves post today about The challenge of Mozillas magnetism is an example. Ive been thinking about this all weekend, writing a post in my head. But now I dont need to, Daves got just about everything I was thinking about already pulled into something coherent. The...http://blog.lizardwrangler.com/2008/07/14/mozillas-magnetism/ Planet Mozilla Interns: Paul O'Shannessy: Programming Brain Teaser- July 14, 2008 Since I was at a presentation during lunch, I took some time for myself and took a quick crack at Dustin Diazs programming brain teaser. He said any language, so the quickest to get running for me is Ruby (and Command-R in Textmate is so easy). Its not terribly clever, but it takes a different approach from some of the other solutions in that it modifies the array elements then just joins them, instead of creating a single output string and concatenating as time goes. My favorite solution..http://zpao.com/articles/6-programming_brain_teaser Vladimir Vukievi: Updates- July 14, 2008 Every time I actually plan on spending more time blogging, it never happens. So... here's a quick update on stuff that I've been working on. Fixing bug 424423 is almost done, the border rendering is really slow bug. roc's been helping me out with reviews, and I've been grumblingly adding aPrefix aTo aAll aMy aParamemter aNames (I can't believe that we haven't decided to drop that silly convention yet). The code's a lot cleaner now, and it also fully handles CSS3-style border-radius, with...http://blog.vlad1.com/2008/07/14/updates/ Code Simplicity: Unforseeable Consequences: Why We Have Principles- July 14, 2008 One of the most important things to know about any kind of engineering is: There are some things about the future that you do not know. Obviously itd be ideal if we were all-knowing and could perfectly predict every consequence of every decision well ever make. But thats impossible. In fact, its so far from possible that if you predict more than half of the consequences of your engineering decisions, youre godlike or just really lucky. Lets take an example outside of the realm of...http://www.codesimplicity.com/archives/32 Mitchell Baker: Concentric Spheres of Community- July 14, 2008 In a post last week I talked about concentric circles of community, noting that I actually think of Mozilla as concentric spheres of community. Thats because each community (practice, action, interest, user) is made up of many different sub-groups. For example, the Community of Practice is that set of people who are sharing resources and using a bunch of Mozilla practices together to achieve a result. Within this group we can find many different kinds of activities. We might think of subsets...http://blog.lizardwrangler.com/2008/07/14/concentric-spheres-of-community/ Doug Warner: Mercurial at Mozdev- July 14, 2008 We're happy to announce the availability of Mercurial for hosting project sources at Mozdev. Documentation can be found here: http:www.mozdev.orgdrupalwikiMozdevMercurial The biggest caveats: CVS is still necessary for maintaining the website and downloads (fixing this is on our roadmap) Projects' source information page needs updated by the PO to include information on Mercurial We weren't planning on removing the old sources from CVS and we don't have a mechanism for locking CVS, so it might.http://www.silfreed.net/blog/2008/07/Mercurial-Mozdev Doug Warner: Upcoming OSCONFirefox Summit trip for Mozdev- July 14, 2008 In 8 days (next Tuesday) I'll be heading to Portland for OSCON 2008. Several days later I'll be heading up to Canada for the Firefox Summit. This is simultaneously awesome and scary. Awesome parts: Meeting my colleagues and board members from Mozdev for the first time Being able to attend sessions and meetbrainstorm with so many people from the open source community, and more specifically, the Mozilla community Some of the scary parts: I haven't flown in a long time. I have no idea what...http://www.silfreed.net/blog/2008/07/Upcoming-OSCONFirefox-Summit-trip-Mozdev Doug Warner: Mozdev status updates and meeting minutes moved- July 14, 2008 I'm going to be doing my Mozdev status updates and sysadmin meeting minutes over on the Mozdev blog now (rss feed). Hopefully this will be picked up by PMO soon.http://www.silfreed.net/blog/2008/07/Mozdev-status-updates-and-meeting-minutes-moved |
