Mitchell Baker: A Second View of the Open Internet - July 10, 2008

A while back Dave Eaves suggested that the open web is a social value. This may be true. Id like to explore a different approach to the Open Web Open Internet. Not opposite, because the two approaches might fit together, but distinctly different. One can think of the Open Internet as something very specific and very concrete, as something that can be built and measured. The Internet itself open, closed, or otherwise is a set of technologies that determine what capabilities are available. The..

Joshua Cranmer: 2900- UNCO bugs - July 10, 2008

As of a few minutes ago, Thunderbird's UNCO bug count dipped below 2900: it stands at 2892 right now (likely to change within a few minutes). For those of you not satisfied with only one products bugs, the sum of all mailnews UNCO bugs (TB bugs + mailnews portions of MAS and Core) is 3236, with Core contributing 227 and MAS with the other 117. Keep triaging!

Rumbling Edge - Thunderbird: Vacation - July 10, 2008

I will be on vacation for the next fortnight till the Summit, with my MacBook Pro in the service centre due to it being unable to charge even after a power cable replacement. So Ill be off Bugzilla, IRC, newsgroups, and only extremely intermittent via email. The Rumbling Edge will return after that, including catching up on changelogs for upcoming releases Thunderbird 2.0.0.16 and Shredder Alpha 2, due out this month.

Giorgio Maone: Programming Brain Teaser - July 10, 2008

OK, Dustin Diaz (via Paul OShannessy) managed to delay my lunch by 30 secs. var arr = 'a', 'b', 'c', 'c', 'd','e', 'e', 'e', 'e', 'e', 'f', 'e', 'f', 'e', 'f', 'a', 'a', 'a', 'f', 'f', 'f'; var solution=&aposa b c c d e e <span>e e e<span> f e f e f a a <span>a<span> f f <span>f<span>&apos; var won = arr.join(&apos &apos).replace(((w)s2s)((:2s)+)(=s$)g, &apos$1<span>$3<span>&apos) == solution; Thanks to the wonderful...

David Eaves: Collaboration - a dirty word rescued by connectivity - July 10, 2008

Collaboration n. 1. The act of working together; united labor. 2. the act of willingly cooperating with an enemy, especially an enemy nation occupying ones own country. During a conversation over breakfast yesterday I was asked to talk about my experience in open source public policy (through Canada25) which led me to talk about the differences between cooperation and collaboration Ive ruminated upon before here. After outlining the idea my friend stopped me and said You know, it is...

John O'Duinn: SF Fire Department by the (wall-clock) numbers - July 10, 2008

Today, while I was driving out of town on vacation: 13:19: Sitting at red light, Im in the front car in a left turn lane. The lights just turned red when I was approaching, so I have time to watch the world around me. Its another warm sunny day here in San Francisco, and everyone is out enjoying the weather. Im at a busy intersection in the Mission district, multiple lanes of fast moving traffic, lots of cars, a bus at the corner bus stop, and crowded sidewalks. 13:21: Bus starts pulling out...

Just Browsing: Mozilla Prism 0.9.1 (Experimental) Now Available - July 10, 2008

Im finally back from my longest vacation since college (which was a while ago, believe me), which coincided with an equally long blogging hiatus. Dont worry, Ill be ramping up now to my normal sluggish blogging rhythm. In the meantime, Ive created some new Prism builds for those who want to play with the latest, greatest version. The main difference between these and the previous builds I posted is that Ive fixed the icky regprot.exe problem and bumped the version numbers for the standalone...

Gervase Markham: 8,002,530 - 1 = 8,002,529 - July 10, 2008

Last night, at the second (!) Firefox 3 launch party in London, a representative from Guinness World Records presented Tristan Nitot with a certificate to say that the Mozilla project is the current holder of the world record for largest number of complete copies of a piece of software downloaded in 24 hours - 8,002,529. The UK contribution was over 300,000, just behind the Spanish but (sorry, Tristan) ahead of the French :-) The certificate we were presented with actually says 8,002,530....

Gervase Markham: Open Website Creation Tools - July 10, 2008

Asa and Paul Ellis have been having an exchange; Paul started by asking why it is we don't bother users at first run with a "Before you go any further, you must choose a search engine from this list of every possible engine we can find, none of whom have ever given us any money" dialog, arguing that therefore we aren't "open to choice". Asa replied, pointing out the difference between our governance model and a standard corporation. He also said, further down in the same comment thread: Its...

Planet Mozilla Interns: Wei Zhou: thoughts about Maxthon - July 10, 2008

About an hour ago I posted a long article about Maxthon, which is originally quoted from here: http:www.linuxjournal.comnode1000159), its about 18 months old, and not totally accurate. Market share numbers arent accurate, user base numbers arent accurate. Then why am I still digging It is not only because as a UE designer, I concern about our competitors UE design; but also as a Chinese, I care about the firefoxs localization in China: today I searched Baidu.com(Chinas 1th search engine)and I...
