Is AS3 Ready For Prime-Time (part 1) - July 12, 2008

This is the first in a series of posts about some issues with Flash, ActionScript 3 and current work-arounds. 1. Real reflections in Papervision3D! - July 12, 2008

You know I&8217;m a fan of the Papervision BasicView, it&8217;s just such a good entry point into Papervision - so easy to work with, and you can even extend it for your document class. But how cool would it be if you could have something as simple as a BasicView, but that automatically created a ...

Where did my camera go - July 12, 2008

Some of you may have noticed that the FreeCamera3D and FrustumCamera3D classes have mysteriously disappeared from the latest version of the GreatWhite alpha test Papervision trunk. But don&8217;t panic! There&8217;s a perfectly logical explanation for it! Tim Knip has been working tirelessly to simplify and refactor the Papervision3D cameras. And what an improvement! There is now ...

How not to design a menu - July 11, 2008

I just got a 3G iPhone and signed in to the O2 website to take a peek at my account, only to be greeted by the menu you see here. My, my, my..! It's completely unscannable, with each line starting with the same prefix ("My"). As I try to scan it, my brain initially refuses ...

TWiT Live Desktop 1.5 - July 11, 2008

I was amazed at the amount of positive feedback I got yesterday when Leo Laporte published the little twitlive.tv AIR application on his blog. Decided to address some of the excellent suggestions that were coming in and spent another hour or so working on it before releasing this 1.5 build. Here&8217;s what has changed: The application ...

I don&8217;t have an iPhone yet, but probably will in the next few weeks. Or maybe days. Anyway, I got the new iTunes and was checking out some of the apps in the app store and rand across this: QuickLight It&8217;s essentially a blank white screen. So if you are in a dark alley fumbling for your ...

Optimizing Perlin Noise - July 11, 2008

Via todays post on nodename about Perlin Clouds and Frocessing I came across Ron Valstars AS3 version of Ken Perlin's Improved Noise reference implementation which I must have missed last year. As Ron mentions the AS3 code runs way slower than the native perlinNoise() method that Flash's BitmapData class offers, but on the other hand his class is true to the original version and offers real 3D Perlin Noise and the possibility to control the falloff factor.
