Council drops land for Foster City charter school - July 22, 2008

The City Council decided late Monday not to continue reserving city-owned land for the proposed Magnolia Science Academy. The Southern California-based Magnolia Educational & Research Foundation and supporters of the proposed academy wanted the council to keep four acres of a 15-acre property near the Government Center open for a public charter high school - an area that might otherwise become part of a larger residential and commercial project. There are too many deficiencies for me," said.

Burlingame struggles to maintain charm - July 22, 2008

Maintaining the current small town feel versus expanding on the ambiance while allowing growth was the problem put before a split Burlingame City Council last night, which ultimately gave mixed direction to the citizens group charged with creating the vision. Design makes or breaks the building - not the height. We're not only looking at height; we're also looking at design," Keighran said adding a strict design review is necessary to maintain the current appeal.

College for Kids: Academic, athletic and artistic - July 21, 2008

Ten-year-old Sanchit isn't the average college student. At around four-feet-tall, the soon-to-be fifth-grader from Foster City was nervous to start taking classes at the College of San Mateo this summer. He didn't know anyone and the campus is much bigger than that of Foster City Elementary. However, Sanchit was pleasantly surprised to find how easy it was to meet people.

County labeling proposal targets chains - July 20, 2008

If two San Mateo County supervisors get their way, people who walk into a Burger King and order up a Whopper and large fries will know exactly how fattening their meal is because the menu will spell it out. If you're going to go into a Burger King, you're going to find the same menu day in and day out. You're not going to find the sea bass special with risotto," Hill said. Photo Credit: Editor B

San Mateo County school construction problems lead to guidelines - July 20, 2008

Local school leaders hope a new report by the San Mateo County Office of Education will help them avoid the kind of construction-related problems the San Mateo Union High School District has endured in recent years. Typically, those of us in public education are not in the construction business," said Peter Burchyns, special-projects consultant for the office. "At least with the small districts, that's not the kind of thing we've been doing as part of our regular business all the time."
