Pittsboro youth earns Eagle Scout award - June 24, 2008

Daniel Chegash, Jr. of Pittsboro earned his Eagle Scout rank and received his badge at an award presentation held at the UNC School of Government in Chapel Hill on June 15.

Fencing can reduce coyote predation - June 23, 2008

Animal control experts out west suggest that "Most coyotes readily cross over, under, or through conventional livestock fences. A coyote's response to a fence is influenced by various factors, including the coyote's experience and motivation for crossing the fence.

Camp Invention comes to J.S. Waters - June 22, 2008

Twenty-five students from across Chatham County participated in Camp Invention at J.S. Waters School in Goldston from June 1620. Students from Bennett, Bonlee, Horton, J.S. Waters, Pittsboro Elementary, Siler City Elementary, and Silk Hope came to the camp.

Teachers go back to school during Summer Institute - June 22, 2008

For the second year Chatham County Schools has offered a Summer Institute for its teachers to study topics they can use in their classrooms. A total of 294 teachers and other certified staff like social workers and psychologists opted to take at least one of the nineteen courses that are offered in May through August.

Chatham County's current drought status - June 21, 2008

Even after getting inch of rain at home Saturday night, Im finding the soil dry 36 hours later! The spring rains moved most of Chatham from Severe to Moderate Drought in late April. Throughout NC, the areas affected by Extreme or Severe Drought slowly shrank until about the end of May. But since the first week of June the areas of drought have begun to increase again.

HIV Testing: regular hours and special evening events coming up - June 21, 2008

The Chatham Social Health Council will be offering free, rapid, confidential HIV testing at Main Street Station near the Hardee's and Piggly Wiggly in Pittsboro every Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting on June 23. This test uses no needles, no blood, and no pain: it's an oral swab, and results come back in 20 minutes.

School meal prices to increase next school year - June 20, 2008

The Chatham County Board of Education voted in February to increase school meal prices. The increases will take effect at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. It has been several years since prices have increased, and child nutrition programs across the state are facing challenges in maintaining financial stability.
