How UCSB got to be an ARPAnet node - (Found June 18, 2008 )

A while ago, somebody told me that UCSB had been the third ARPAnet node. This is pretty cool, but I didn&8217;t know how or why it happened. The first two nodes were at UCLA (with Leonard Kleinrock) and the Stanford Research Institute (with Douglas Engelbart), and my school doesn&8217;t seem to logically follow. Then a month ago, a person who helped UCSB connect to the ARPAnet, Larry Green, came to my college to tell us all about it. He was an engineer at UCSB from 1965 to 1977, and he led...

Printmaking class project number one - (Found June 18, 2008 )

The following prints are adapted from that photo, which I took last year around Taft. See all of them at once, pictures of the process, and a little video of making a print. I like oil wells. They look like dinosaurs, and they&8217;re &8220;drinking&8221; liquefied ancient dinosaur matter, so they&8217;re weird mechanical cannibals. This class is taught by the same person who taught my letterpress class a while ago. Working on paper takes a long time, but it&8217;s fun and helps me.

Wozniak visits the College of Creative Studies - (Found June 18, 2008 )

A photo by kamoore on Flickr. Last week Steve Wozniak visited Santa Barbara and gave a talk at the Arlingon Theatre downtown. I didn&8217;t go to that, but earlier that day he did a friendly question-and-answer session at my college because our dean Bruce Tiffney is great and wrangles that kind of thing sometimes. Wozniak seemed happy to talk about himself to a bunch of random kids; he fielded questions ranging from the Apple II memory layout to Segway polo. Here are some things he said,...

The delights of smoggy San Pedro - June 18, 2008

Doug and I like to make up for my environmentally-conscious lifestyle by going on long driving adventures, and on Saturday we went to the Port of Los Angeles. It&8217;s a nice place for people who are fascinated by cranes, containers, trains, ships, bridges, giant utilitarian machines of all kinds, decaying buildings, rust, and many other things that are nice to look at in contrast to computer screens. Then we headed back to Santa Barbara and Doug accidentally explored back...
