Baksy: The New Kazakhstan Film - June 24, 2008

An aged femme shaman, gangsters and assorted innocents are thrown together in Kazakhstan-set drama "Baksy," helmer Guka Omarova's fluent sophomore outing. Although slightly less resonant than her similarly noir-inflected debut, "Schizo," the latest pic pulls off the same trick of making well-worn crime plotting look entirely natural within its Central Asian setting. Pic will definitely enjoy fest play, but the chances of "Baksy" securing wide distribution don't look any better than they did for.

Dam Helps Increase Fish in Northern Aral Sea - June 23, 2008

A dam project helped raise water levels and increase fish stocks in the northern part of the depleted Aral Sea, offering hope of some revival in areas of one of the world's worst ecological disasters. The people of the Northern Aral Sea region in Kazakhstan may soon see their economy revitalized and the return of large-scale fishing and farming, said President Robert Zoellick.

Russia to Launch Cruise Line Along the Caspian Sea - June 20, 2008

Russian side intends to launch a cruise line along the Caspian Sea for the first time in the history in spring of 2009, said Gennady Pilipenko, chief of department for development of internal tourism projects of the Russian Federal Tourism Agency.
