Comment by slugcrusher on Fixing SQL Server 2008 RTM Installation Issues Due To Visual Studio 2008 Dependencies - September 17, 2008

I found this very helpful. I'm looking to upgrade from SQL2000 to SQL2008, what do I REALLY need to know before attempting this I'm figuring on a completely new install on a new box, maybe a IBM3950 but I'm nervous about SQL2008. I can't find anytghing that tells me where are the landmines and how big the warts are. Can anybody point me in the right direction to get this type of info !! Comment by Payton Byrd on Unsolved Mysteries: Vista's Automatic "Wake Up" While In Hibernate Or Sleep Mode - September 16, 2008

There are BIOS settings that allow a system to be awaken for hardware events, including timers. Some software can set these timers to wake up your computer to do some work. Unfortunately I haven't seen a BIOS yet that gives you a way to manage these from the BIOS interface, although you can typically control which hardware devices cause a system to wake up (usually network cards and USB devices). !! Have you updated recently It seems that you have an update that is trying to install itself and failing. Then trying again. Either that or you have a virus or trojan :) You should only be getting msinstaller entries when a program is being installed. System restore is the system rolling back when the install fails for some reason. Do a good scan of your system, check the registry for unknown installation programs that may be starting, check the msinstaller log entry to see wha

Comment by Ralph Wilson on Those Little Helper Programs... - September 12, 2008

A long time ago, I learned that there is only one way to have a "one-time use" program actually be a "one-time use" program. Do not distribute the source code and have the executable delete itself after the first time it is run. I did almost exactly the same kind of thing, except it was against a DB database and was, originally, for my own use in setting up test data. As one might expect, I made it work the way I wanted it to and then some of my colleagues saw

Developers only solve the problem at hand, which isn't necessarily the one that they should have been given. Even the simplest of programs may have odd cases where the "It wasn't designed for THAT" could be what is said, e.g. a metric-imperial measurement converter that has to take numbers in either digit or word form like 8 is the same as eight with possible decimal values where precision has to be maintained is a little bit harder than the grade school version that takes a simple integer and

>>Those little one offs never stay as a one off Scary. I've made quite a lot of unofficial one-offs for someone somewhere in all the teams I've worked with. And I don't expect that to stop either.. It takes form in many ways - programs to scripts to excel macros to whatever feasible. I love writing neat programs... provided I'm given extra time and an official seal! !! Being an old coder myself I can say that any code should be written as though it is going to be reused andor expanded. Those little one offs never stay as a one off :) !! Entry Link: Those Little Helper Programs...!!
