Buckminster Fuller takes on big coal - June 23, 2008

(University of Vermont) In the quest for coal, 1.5 million acres of Appalachia have been strip-mined, mountains removed, trillions of gallons of toxic slurry left behind. Not a promising place for a new green economy to arise. Or maybe it is. For his proposed solution to this disaster, "Comprehensive Design for a Carbon Neutral World: The Challenge of Appalachia," the University of Vermont's John Todd won the first $100,000 Buckminster Fuller Prize in New York City, June 23.

Laser fluorescence could find life on Mars - June 23, 2008

(Oregon State University) A team of scientists from the United States and the United Kingdom has developed a technique using ultraviolet light to identify organic matter in soils that they say could be used to document the existence of life on Mars.

New report available on ecosystems and climate change - June 20, 2008

(U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) The US Environmental Protection Agency has released a report that can help reduce the potential impact of climate change on estuaries, forests, wetlands, coral reefs and other sensitive ecosystems. The report, titled "Preliminary Review of Adaptation Options for Climate-Sensitive Ecosystems and Resources," identifies strategies to protect the environment as these changes occur.

Canada-India RFID project looks to improve traffic flow, reduce pollution - June 19, 2008

(McMaster University) An intelligent transportation system framework is being developed through a new research collaboration established by the McMaster RFID Applications Lab, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, IPICO Inc. and Strategic Consultants. The $2.5 million initiative is receiving $1.2 million in matching funding by International Science and Technology Partnerships Canada and the Global Innovation & Technology Alliance. The remaining funding is provided by industry partners.

Air travelers, astronomers stand to benefit from research on atmospheric turbulence - June 19, 2008

(Arizona State University) Arizona State University professor Alex Mahalov has been awarded a $716,000 grant from the US Air Force to study types of atmospheric turbulence that cause problems for air travelers and astronomers.He will work to improve techniques for identifying and forecasting areas of clear-air turbulence that can turn smooth flights into jarring rides, and seek ways of helping astronomers cope with optical turbulence that obscures their views of space.
