Cottage Cheese German Style - June 11, 2008

Growing up we had a neighbor from Germany that used to make this. What makes this unusual is the preparation. I don't know what it's called, but I know she used it as a dip & a dressing. It's great as a topping for baked potatoes, or with raw veggies, good bread etc. She'd have it in the evening as a snack with her glass of wine that she put Sweet Woodruff (a flowerground cover she grew in her garden) leaves in, (also a German tradition). This is really nice to have on hand. Her original...

Apple Streusel Cake - June 3, 2008

This is a tradditional German dessert given to me by my German friend Nicola. It's some work, but absolutely delicious and worth it! The Streusel amounts are approximate as you have to mix it together with your hands until you reach the perfect crumbly texture that make it streusel. -- posted by Enjolinfam

Sour Cherry Chocolate Torte - June 3, 2008

This is a simple, elegant chocolate dessert, with a slightly rustic look; it's perfect for dinner parties or any night. It has a wonderful combination of textures from the crust of the torte the moistness of the cake and cherries and the slight crunch from the almonds. We've been known to devour one with another couple as we played pinochle; a slice between hands and soon it would be gone! You can serve it warm (my favorite way) or at room temp. Always serve with real whipped cream. -- posted...

Krautlsuppe (Bavarian Herb Soup) - June 3, 2008

Bitter herbs are traditionally eaten at Easter in Christian countries as a sign of penitence. This Bavarian soup is served on Easter Thursday, known as Maundy Thursday. Fresh chervil, easily available in any German market, is usually the dominating flavor. This is a delicate fresh-tasting soup for any time of the year. -- posted by Celticevergreen
