Monster - February 28, 2004

Monster Got one of those emails from Dante this week about Monster.  Thought with the awards this weekend and all that I would share some of it.  I think it somehow lightens my load as the bearer of this email, getting some of it out in the light so to speak... I felt this film was a love letter to every sequestered emotion you ever felt if you felt, ever, you were the outsider.  She went so outside, she wen nevah come back.  Up the river, up the river. In the future I..

Lost and Found - February 26, 2004

Lost and Found In the transition to the new job, I was digging through the notebooks I have kept for the last 9 years.  These are my business notebooks where I have scribbled to-do lists and notes from phone conversations, alternating colors sometimes to add emphasis.  At some point on April 14th in the year 1998, I managed to scribble a little verse...   Fourth of July shapeshifting mercurochrome bloody sizzle skies lit up in this smug glow of summer tracers like amphetamine...

Take This Job And... - February 24, 2004

Take This Job And... I've started writing this post several times and then accidentally closed my browser, requiring me to reconstruct the original thoughts each time.  No, they aren't getting any better.  I have decided to be to the point: I'm leaving my job for a new one.  I am celebratory, yet needing to devote time and energy to writing a resignation letter.  Amazon advised to keep it short and sweet, and then if you ...might want to sue, don't let on. Quietly...

City of God - February 16, 2004

City of God By all means, please see this movie.  Hands down, the movie of the year.  Not the feel good movie of the year, but a beautiful and brutal look at Rio's street culture.  Also caught House of Sand and Fog, which was thoroughly enjoyable. But perhaps the profoundly worst movie I saw this weekend or any weekend for that matter was Iron Jawed Angels...whoa did that suck.  Shocking the HBO would produce such directoral malfeasance.  Early in the movie, they stage..

The Wrath Of Khan - February 11, 2004

The Wrath of Khan I got kicked out of preschool as a kid in Hawaii.  I thought I would come clean on this in case I ever ran for public office.  When my parents came in to talk my dismissal over with the pricipal, they found out that the big problem was that I was "controlling the class."  My teachers had complained that I got more attention than the them due to my antics.  My father responded that instead of kicking me out, they should be skipping me a few grades!  I..

Counterpoint, more thoughts on the Atkins Presidency - February 9, 2004

Counterpoint A response to the  pater familias: Your Dad should look at the weirdness of the employment figures, as opposed to the robustness in the Stock Market. That's right -- investors have money to burn, but they are investing it where they can get a higher ROI -- overseas, currency trading, anywhere but where it employs people in this country. If in fact the Communist Chinese weren't buying up our debts like there is no tomorrow, trying to prop up a falling dollar, that dollar would..

America responds to The Atkins Presidency - February 9, 2004

Father Responds to The Atkins Presidency As most of you might know, and as many of you probably don't care, my father's name is John Schwartz too.  Aside from that, he's a careful thinking Republican and never backs down from a debate.  Here's his email response to my post about Bush and Atkins: I am truly amazed at the political claptrap you spew out on your blog. It is not considered enlightening when all one does is regurgitate what the NYT has to say. A true commentator...
