Draft Revised Recovery Plan for the Northwest Atlantic Loggerhead Sea Turtle Available for Review - May 30, 2008

NOAAs Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) are seeking public input on the draft revised recovery plan for the northwest Atlantic population of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta). The species is listed globally as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

NOAA Scientist Elected to The Royal Society - May 29, 2008

International Scientists Find Acidified Water on the Continental Shelf from Canada to Mexico - May 23, 2008

Evidence of corrosive water caused by the oceans absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) was found less than 20 miles off the west coast of North America during a field study from Canada to Mexico last summer. This was the first time acidified ocean water has been found on the continental shelf of western North America.

NOAA Reduces Halibut Catch for Southeast Alaska Charter Anglers to Protect Stock - May 23, 2008

New Study Finds Most North Pacific Humpback Whale Populations Rebounding - May 22, 2008

The number of humpback whales in the North Pacific Ocean has increased since international and federal protections were enacted in the 1960s and 70s, according to a new report funded primarily by NOAA and conducted by more than 400 whale researchers throughout the Pacific region.

NOAA Proposes Rule to Prevent Commercial Harvesting of Krill - May 21, 2008

NOAAs Fisheries Service issued a proposed rule in the Federal Register to prohibit the future harvesting of krill between three and 200 miles of the coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington. Krill are a small shrimp-like crustacean and a key source of nutrition in the marine food web.
