Tough Going for Employees Filing Federal Job Discrimination Suits - (Found September 22, 2008 )

Employees bringing federal job discrimination suits fair significantly worse than their employers and, as a result, employees have begin avoiding federal courts in droves during the last five years, according to a new study in the Harvard Law & Policy Review. Defendants in federal appeals managed to win reversal of trial losses 41% of the time while plaintiffs managed only a 9% reversal rate, the study points out.

Drexel University Wins in Professor's Tenure Dispute - (Found September 22, 2008 )

A Philadelphia judge ruled last week that Drexel University did not materially deviate from its process for determining tenure, granting summary judgment in favor of the university and against a professor who was denied tenure. Judge Upholds Subpeona of Attorney Work Records - (Found September 22, 2008 )

A subpoena seeking the employment records of a former Binghamton attorney as part of a state investigation into public pension fund abuses is not overbroad and must be complied with, a state judge has ruled. Acting Supreme Court Justice Gerald W. Connolly of Albany dismissed John W. Hogan's motion to quash Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo's April 3 subpoena.

Seventh Circuit Rejects Former TV Producer's Suit Over 'Predator'-Related Firing - (Found September 22, 2008 )

Winston & Strawn won a victory for NBC on Sept. 11 when an appellate court ruled the network was justified in firing a producer who refused to work on the controversial "To Catch a Predator" series because of ethical qualms.

Yale Law Women Group Names Top 10 Family-Friendly Firms - (Found September 22, 2008 )

Yale Law Women has taken its latest look at law firms' policies. Releasing its third annual survey on family-friendly firms, the student group cites the 10 best at helping lawyers strike a work-life balance. Some results were heartening. The group found, for example, that the firms are giving men an average of eight weeks of paternity leave. Other figures were more daunting, such as the finding that, even in the most family-friendly firms, women make up only 19 percent of partners.

Picket Ruling May Fuel Labor Tensions - (Found September 22, 2008 )

A recent California court ruling that says union members can picket in shopping malls -- even during peak holiday seasons -- is causing yet more friction between organized labor and employers. Union supporters view the decision as a much-needed boost to the struggling labor movement, while management-side lawyers fear the ruling will lead to yet more picketing and make companies more vulnerable to negative attacks and bad publicity.
