I think your two predictions are right on the money Jaco: - the MoE will end the licence agreements sometime in the future - Open Office could become the norm. I haven't used Open (or Neo) Office. I'd be keen to hear what people think of it. I believe that it's a very usable product and that people could migrate with minimum fuss. I have heard about some people who thought you could trick staff into using Open Office by saying it was "just the new version of Word"!

The "secret" in all of this is that this is just the beginning of the end of the licence agreement as we know it. Soon every school will get a little bag of money and be told to "buy what you use" (maybe the MOE will negotiate "a school price"). It is also a fact that more than half the Apple users (kids) in schools dont give a dam about MS Office because they dont use it. My preciction is that very soon most PC schools will look at open source and the Apple schools will stick mainly to what.

Perhaps a move to free and open source software is now time Not just for the savings, but for the literacy, capacity, and choice Not the same context, but similar issues by the sound of it. In short, the kids got the hang of it quickly, the teachers complained, as did the older students already schooled in the limited option.
