Comments for ERP Etc.Evaluating, selecting, and using ERP software solutions. Frank discussion from inside the world of SMB ERP software.Comment by ram dhas on The Golden Rule for ERP Software Vendors - Use What You Sell and Sell What You Use- August 11, 2008 Hi, It's a nice article indeed..But lemme share some of my opinion..though i'm realtively young in these fields...Nowadays, implemetation partners often consult in more than one ERP solutions like SAP, ORACLE-EBS..If they r using a product say PeopleSoftHRMS for their needs(typically a consulting company which is labour intensive will need a roboust HRMS soln.) and let's say they r positioning OracleEBSSAP for a Process type of industrym, it makes more sense to validate the product herhttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/erp-etc/the-gold... Comment by jbking on The Golden Rule for ERP Software Vendors - Use What You Sell and Sell What You Use- August 8, 2008 This reminds of something I've been meaning to try to understand, what is meant by vertical and horizontal when talking about software packages Does vertical imply scale of companies and horizontal and difference of industries I may be misunderstanding some of what is said as I'm not sure I totally understand what is meant by these terms in relation to businesses. Comment by Rebecca Gill on The Golden Rule for ERP Software Vendors - Use What You Sell and Sell What You Use- August 8, 2008 JB, Opposing views are always welcome. I like to hear feedback, especially if I am well off base on my views. In my post I did mention vertical solutions and that my blog entry would not apply to those developers. While I would not necessarily expect Intuit to use QuickBooks internally, Microsoft is another story. Microsoft does offer a number of ERP and CRM software packages. If an ERP solution is truly a solid horizontal package and the package ishttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/erp-etc/the-gold... Comment by robertdant on The Golden Rule for ERP Software Vendors - Use What You Sell and Sell What You Use- August 8, 2008 Both good points. However, in 1985 I was looking for a financial system for a medium sized international distribution company. One of the products was Oracle financials. So this was back before Oracle was huge - they needed a financial system that probably was similar to ours. Our financial team was really hung up on Oracle financials just like the rest of the world was. So - like a dummy - I asked for a list of references and expected to see theirs - which I would have never called. Comment by jbking on The Golden Rule for ERP Software Vendors - Use What You Sell and Sell What You Use- August 8, 2008 May I come in and offer an opposing viewpoint If the company is on a different scale than the product they are selling, it may make sense for them to not eat their own dog food, as some prefer to describe the "use what you sell" idea. Some huge companies may offer a small business solution that I don't think one should knock if they don't use it internally, e.g. do you think Microsoft uses every version of Windows internally somehow or that Intuit uses Quickbooks as their internal accounhttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/erp-etc/the-gold... Comment by Rebecca Gill on The Golden Rule for ERP Software Vendors - Use What You Sell and Sell What You Use- August 8, 2008 Brian, I'm happy to hear you agree with my blog post. I would assume Steve Jobs uses an iPod and iPhone, since he appears to believe in his product offering. I always thought ERP developers were the same. As I said above, I was a bit naive... Rebecca !! Comment by Brian Driggs on The Golden Rule for ERP Software Vendors - Use What You Sell and Sell What You Use- August 8, 2008 That's pretty sound reasoning for going with a different vendor if you ask me. The first rule of being successful in sales is that you have to believe in what you're selling. If you're using a competing product, why shouldn't I Talk about facing an objection... !!
