Future of Newspapers & Magazines - November 25, 2004

Will newspapers die off with the current batch of newspaper readers That seems to be the suggestion Newspapers Should Really Worry at Wired News. Polling of younger news consumers revealed that while they're well-read and informed, they don't look to single monolithic sources, like a newspapers or a magazine for news and information as the previous generation did. Further, they don't even rely on the paper editions of the newspapers they do read bits and pieces from. Young people just aren't...

Good Reads: The Hughtrain & How To Be Creative - November 19, 2004

Last weekend, quite by accident, I came across gapingvoid.com, the weblog of Hugh MacLeod. While browsing there, I stumbled on one of his posts entitled The Hughtrain, Hugh's own variation on the Cluetrain Manifesto (another incredible document well worth reading, if you haven't yet). Next thing I know, an hour has passed while I read The Hughtrain, complete with laughing at his prose and cartoons, drawn on the backs of business cards. Hughtrain is fresh, unpretentious and challenging,...

What's My Currency - November 17, 2004

I enjoy reading Fast Company articles and this week I came across another good one called Finding Your Currency by Keith Ferrazzi. The gist of the article is that we each have some "currency" or "currencies" related to our personalities that makes us each unique and valuable in our profession or life. It might even be something we don't realize we possess, yet is quite valuable to others. I found this interesting, because I'd never thought of skills or attributes as currency before. A key quote.

Nathan's 2nd Birthday, Yay! - November 13, 2004

Today, our son Nathan turned 2 years old. Amazing. My wife and I just can't believe how quickly 2 years has flown past. I suppose parents with older kids will tell me it will only speed up, right :-) Anyway, we're about to start Nathan's big party, but before I do, I'd like to share a sketchtoon created in my small Moleskine sketchbook this morning, while we all enjoyed a birthday donut session at Cranky Al's Donut shop: Have a great weekend everyone — I know we will. :-)...

Wandering Moleskine Sketchtoon - November 11, 2004

Click the image above to see a higher-resolution version About a month ago, I was notified by Armand Frasco at Moleskinerie that he was kicking off something called the Wandering Moleskine Project. I was intrigued by the idea, so I immediately signed up to participate. The idea behind this project is simple: send several large Moleskine sketchbooks around the world to participating Moleskinerie fans, allowing each to create something on a single page of the book. Upon completion, the work is...

A Challenge to Encouragement - November 9, 2004

Serious Cyclist wasn't about to quit either &8212; he stayed with us those last few miles, calling out the challenge again and again...... With his last spurring on, we attacked the last corner into the town of Grandview, pumping out the last few feet of the race, rolling across the finish line.... I was so grateful for his encouraging words to our group, because I know that without him, we'd have surely limped across the line much later than we did.... After experiencing the boost provided.

Cafe Bag Discovery - November 5, 2004

Last weekend I stumbled across a great new bag while creating an Indiana Jones costume for a party on Saturday. I wanted to share the details of my new "Cafe Bag" bag, in case you might be interested in picking one up for yourself. First, I should offer my definition of a so-called "Cafe Bag" eh It's a bag large enough to hold multiple 8.5x11 or A4 papers, sketchbooks or magazines, deep enough for library book toting or reference book carrying. It should also accommodate...
