The final night, Saturday, I went the mellow route. Started at the Texas Union Theatre (on the UT campus) to see Will Taylor and Strings Attached, featuring Sara Hickman, Patrice Pike, Eliza Gilkyson, Slaid Cleaves, Guy Forsyth, Michael Fracasso, Kellye Gray, and Abra Moore. I was hoping to catch Staid Cleaves, but I saw only Sara Hickman and Abra Moore, both of whom were multi-talented and put on delightful performances. Highlights included: Lucinda, then Willie at the Austin Music Hall. Willie is a master of his craft. His blues guitar was exquisite. Full of heart and good times. Lucinda did a set featuring mostly raw new material that sometimes bordered on a rap, then was pissed that they made her leave the stage a midnight. She wasn't ready to stop, but SXSW keeps a pretty tight schedule. Kind of left on a sour note Love Syndicate again at the Bitter End - this time.http://radio.weblogs.com/0111108/2003/03/15.html#a75 SXSW Fun, Day 2- March 14, 2003 Today I started at 10:00 at the Austin Music Hall to see Daniel Lanois, one of my very favorite live musicians. This show turned out to be fairly different than the other two times I had seen him, first at the Jazz Fest in New Orleans, where he was totally transcendent; a few years later in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall. This show was a little looser, a bit more intimate, not quite so powerful, but excellent nonetheless. Decided I really wanted to see live mustic right away and headed out to Antone's where the Jake Andrews Band was playing. The were a rockin' power trio. Liked it. Moseyed over to Opal Divine's Freehouse, where I caught Nadine. Then passed by the Fox and Hound and Momo's, where a stopped for a while to listen to Micky and The Motorcars. Here I am, at the end of my South by Southwest volunteer shift. I flip through the Chronicle to see who's playing tonight. I notice Marcia Ball at Antone's, started early, like 7:00. I walk the 12 or so blocks from the Austin Convention Center to the club at Lavaca and 5th. Poke my head in so see how much it costs. $15. "Any show special for SXSW volunteers" Hmmm... $10.
