Real takes Rhapsody DRM free, launches deal with Verizon - First Take- June 30, 2008 News from the folks at Real that Rhapsody will be going DRM free, but only for songs purchased. The subscription content will still be protected. Good move for Real but somewhat late. While there's some nice stuff, such as the ability to listen to 25 tracks per month free, lack of DRM will not change the game immediately. Amazon has been there for a while now and hasn't made much of a dent against iTunes. At the end of the day, DRM just doesn't matter that much to most consumers and devices...http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/real_takes_rhap.ht... Wonder what he thought of Vista- June 25, 2008 Great email find from from Todd Bishop over at the Seattle PI. My favorite line. "they told me that using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated." Seriously. i'd pay good money to see the Vista email :)http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/wonder_what_he.htm... T-Mobile Home Changes the Landline Story - First Take- June 25, 2008 I've been a big fan of T-Mobile's Hotspot Home service for a while. I love how it allows you to use your cell phone at home over WiFi. Great connections and bonus, for $10 a month all your calls are free, local and long distance. Today, T-Mobile is taking it the next level applying the same technology as a land line replacement service. It uses a special Linksys router that plugs into a broadband connection and also has connections to plug any phone directly into it. You also pop in a SIM card..http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/tmobile_home_ch.ht... OLPC does Windows XP- June 24, 2008 I'm writing this post on a different computer than I normally use. This one's a stock OLPC running Windows XP off a 2gb SD card (with about a gig left over for storage). My first impressions are very positive. Last year, when I met with Nicholas Negroponte he discussed that XP would be an option and it was being worked on. Well, it's a reality and it works well. I think the value of Windows on the platform is huge although I can't say I love the hardware. Granted, it wasn't designed for...http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/olpc_does_windo.ht... Nokia Acquires Symbian, Sets it Free - First Take- June 24, 2008 I've been in meetings all morning so while I posted a few first, first thoughts on Twitter I'm a little behind in my first take. Fortunately, colleagues Ian Fogg and Thomas Huson offered their insights this morning. As Thomas correctly notes, this is the acquisition of the rest of Symbian that Nokia previously did not own and is a bold move and a major investment on the order of 400 million + dollars. So what does it mean 1. This is a reminder that there is no single dominant player in the...http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/nokia_acquires.htm... Sprint Instinct - First Thoughts- June 19, 2008 Thanks to Sprint and my colleague Julie Ask, the Sprint Instinctshowed up today. There's been a lot of comparisons with the Instinct and the iPhone but I'm not going to get into that and keep the focus on the Instinct itself. I spent some time with it this afternoon and it shines. While it's not a productivity phone, it is a great high end media and entertainment phone with some killer features. Some things, like the voice search based on location are fantastic (just say Starbucks and it will..http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/sprint_instinct.ht... Tim Russert - RIP- June 13, 2008 Twitter has been abuzz with the passing of Tim Russert. Christina Warren said it well. "Russert was one of the last journalists from the MurrowCronkite school of journalism; he didnt masquerade opinion as news and he didnt let his personal politics obscure his ability to interview or go after the truth in a story. He was a gentleman, a family man and a comforting voice. He was also hella smart as a political analyst. He was able to identify the key states needed for electoral victory in 2000..http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/tim_russert_rip.ht... Betamax, XFL and Zune Oh What if.- June 13, 2008 Seriously funny. Internet comment at the end reminded me of a former colleague who said the "Internet is a passing fad, the CB Radio of the 90s" Enjoy!http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/betamax_xfl_and.ht... HTC Touch Diamond - Ten Quick Thoughts- June 11, 2008 I've spent a little more time with the device, here's a few more thoughts. 1. The screen continues to blow me away every time I turn it on. You really need to see this to appreciate it. 2. The VGA resolution along with the TouchFlo 3D UI is really pushing the limits of the processor. Every so often, the unit lags a half second or so behind me. It's not horrible but it is annoying. 3. It's possible for most users to use this device without every seeing Windows Mobile underneath. TouchFlo UI is...http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/2008/06/five_things_id.htm... |
