Vehicle update - April 30, 2008

Yes, I know I just posted one. But now it's time for another, damn it all to Xenu.In our last thrilling episode, the shifter on Stu had broken (specifically, the cheap plastic bushing that connects the shift cable to the shift lever broke. This problem is apparently endemic to Saturns from '91 - '02). Yesterday I got the stainless steel replacement part in the mail, and decided to attach it. I followed the seller's instructions, removing the remaining bits of the old bushing, swabbing the...

Arcadia is back together - April 28, 2008

I spent tonight putting Arcadia back together, including her old RR. With Stu out of commission, I need a working vehicle to get me back and forth to work. I have removed the inline fuel filter that I thought might be causing problems. I hooked her battery up to Stu and she started and ran, so hopefully she'll get me to and from work tomorrow. :)I also went to the motocycle swap meet today where I bought, among other things, a new horn for Arcadia. It's got a trumpet on. Mwahahahahahaaha!.

An open letter to Rockstar Games - April 27, 2008

Dear folks at R,You know what would be really cool in a Grand Theft Auto title Icy roads. Think about it. Icy roads suck in real life, because they're generally hard to drive on and the lack of traction (and to be fair, drivers' lack of experience driving on icy roads) leads to collisions with people, cars, trees, and inanimate objects. And collisions like those suck in real life. However, collisions with people, cars, trees, and inanimate objects in a Grand Theft Auto title are fun as all...

Yay solar sails! - April 27, 2008

http:space.newscientist.comarticledn13776-space-spiderwebs-could-propel-future-probes.htmlSo basically what you've got is this gossamer-thin web of wire, miles and miles across. You put a positive charge on the wire and as the solar wind blows across it, the positive ions in the wind repel the positively-charged wire and the spacecraft starts to move. Only a tiny little bit, but over a year or two it adds up - seeing as how there is very little friction in interplanetary space - and the...

Vehicle update - April 27, 2008

As I said Wednesday, the shifter on Stu has gone out, so I had him towed to Hank's Auto Repair.Today ruisseau helped me get Stu out of the parking lot at Hank's Auto Repair so I could take him home. Hank's wanted $370 to fix the shifter, of which nearly $200 was the replacement shifter cable. At first I was going to bite the bullet and have them do it, but then I did some research. Seems that Saturns like Stu are prone to having the bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the shift lever..
