The bad quality of Nokia phones - July 6, 2007

On Wednesday I had to send my Nokia 9300i to repairs, and this was for the second time. Got the phone just a year ago, so it is still under warranty. I'm not at all satisfied with the quality of Nokia phones. Before having the 9300i, my 9500 broke from the hinges and there were problems with the display. And before the 9500, I had a 6800 which also broke from the hinges. Would the newest Nokia Communicator - E90 - be better Well, at least Volker Weber likes his Nokia E90: "I have now...

Digital SLRs and the availability of lenses - July 2, 2007

I have been discussing digital SLRs and the availability of good lenses with Sven, especially related to the new Pentax K100D super. Pentax has the advantage of being compatible with virtually all Pentax lenses ever made, so there are a lot of choices. I have an old Minolta XG-1, but unfortunately there are no digital SLRs compatible with the lenses I have, for example a 1.8 aperture 50 mm lens. When I bought a Minolta XG 1 in 1980 (or 1981), my two other choices were Canon AE-1 and Pentax...

Adding copy and paste to iPhone - July 2, 2007

One of the missing features on the iPhone is a clipboard. There is an interesting discussion on how to add a clipboard to the iPhone at Kottke.org.

The iPod that transformed into a phone - July 1, 2007

This weekend seems to be iPhone-crazy in the USA, and newspapers are writing yet more articles about the phenomenon, from the New York Times (Gave Up Sleep and Maybe a First-Born, but at Least I Have an iPhone) to Macworld (The iPod that's really a phone). The phone seems to meet most expectations, but there are shortcomings as well. For me the most interesting comment was the lack of copypaste functionality. The easiest way to transfer information seems to be through the mail program. But...

Entry-level digital SLRs get better - July 1, 2007

The entry-level digital SLR market is getting crowded. Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sony all have great SLRs, but for me the most interesting choice is currently Pentax K100D Super, which has a new dust removal system and some other (minor) improvements. Reviews of the previous K100D model have been quite positive, so I'm planning to check the camera out. On the other hand, a pocket-size compact digital camera is so much easier to carry along, so I'm not quite convinced of getting a SLR.
