Hani Simpson ;-)- January 27, 2004 "It's a good idea, but it's a new idea; therefore, I fear it and must reject it." --- Hani Suleiman. Oops! I mean Homer Simpson ;-) Ara.http://www.jroller.com/ara_e/entry/hani_simpson XAML- January 21, 2004 Microsoft's XAML format for defining rich client UIs looks promising. O'Reilly's ondotnet has a nice article on XAML. Interestingly the XAML file is compiled to a class in compile time! But you can embed code inside the UI definition just like JSP. If you find it similar to what Gerald Bauer has been preaching on TSS and javalobby then that's right. XAML is Microsoft's way of XUL-ifying rich client UI design. The poor guy had something to say but he presented it so terribly that people...http://www.jroller.com/ara_e/entry/xaml Memento- January 20, 2004 According to this post by Chris Stevenson it seems JDK 1.5's enum stuff is better than what C offers. That's good! I hate it when people blindly copy stuff from another languageplatform or blindly accept whatever the community imposes on them. Many of the so called J2EE or EJB patterns for example, were only anti-patterns or workarounds imposed by the community of blind followers of the holy platform. Take the Data Transfer Object pattern. It's just a workaround really. What we really...http://www.jroller.com/ara_e/entry/memento J3EE on the horizon- January 18, 2004 Jon thinks J3EE is on the horizon: When I started blogging on Freeroller (now JRoller, then roller.anthonyeden.com) over two years ago (I think I was user number 15) there were some talk about J3EE (ever so slightly tongue-in-cheek). A platform that was lightweight, extensible and testable. Well... We're almost there... I agree. All the pieces of the puzzle are here: AOP support (AOP Alliance, and other AOP frameworks like JBoss') IoC support, oops I mean Dependency Injection.http://www.jroller.com/ara_e/entry/j3ee_is_on_the_horizon This Book Is About Simplicity, Dude!- January 6, 2004 Wow! So our book has been reviewed by many people so far, including the infamous Mr. bile. Read Joe's and Pat's responses here and here. Yes we had some mistakes. It could have become a better book. I personally have learned a lot during the process of writing it, which I'm going to write about later, stay tuned :-) I'll look at it here from a different angle. Over anything else, this book is about simplicity. Using simple open source tools, with simple and minimal design to develop a...http://www.jroller.com/ara_e/entry/this_book_is_about_simplicity How Fragile We Are- January 4, 2004 NYTimes has a horrifying article on nuclear programs of several countries and how Pakistan plays a central role in it. If the intelligence information presented in the article is right then we're living in a very fragile and dangerous world. I'm really shocked by the extent of the links between Pakistan and several other countries. A fragile Pakistan helping extremists countries, and apparently just for money, information, and worst of all, ideology. Ara.http://www.jroller.com/ara_e/entry/how_fragile_we_are DVD Conversion- January 3, 2004 Doh! It's unbelievable how hard it is to convert a DVD to XVidAVIDivXwhatever. I've tried several programs so far. Most of them use crappy settings and produce crappy pictures. There's Gordian Knot of course, the amazingly sophisticated open source DVD converter app. It certainly has a very good name! DVD conversion seems to be damn hard. Getting 80%+ of DVD quality from conversion process is a huge success and you have to spend a huge amount of time tuning all those nasty parameter, and..http://www.jroller.com/ara_e/entry/dvd_conversion |
