Code:QMats Henricson's weblogGabbly - my mind is racing- March 31, 2006 Just bumped into Gabbly and my mind haven't settled yet for all the ways this stuff can be used for. Haven't been this pumped for a year or so. I'd LOVE to show this stuff on Sand Hill Road. It would be a blast. You guys at Gabbly - don't sell yourself cheap! To get an idea of what this stuff does, go to http:gabbly.comwww.slashdot.org or http:gabbly.comwww.yourdomain.com. No code to install, just embed some simple HTML, or append your URL after http:gabbly.com.http://www.jroller.com/matsh/entry/gabbly_my_mind_is_racing JavaScript Date parsing fun- March 26, 2006 Just bumped into an amusing anomaly in how Mozilla does date parsing in its JavaScript Date constructor. Quick, what date is returned by this code: document.write(new Date("31 03 2006")) The result is: Thu Jul 03 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0200 31 is (of course) 212+7, and with July being the 7th month, it is all crystal clear. IE gives me a NaN, which makes more sense, I'd say.http://www.jroller.com/matsh/entry/javascript_date_parsing_fun The road to process hell is paved with good intentions- March 18, 2006 Creating a process for software development is very delicate. In a large project there are so many steps that might go wrong. It makes much sense to add process to minimise risk in these steps. But, the road to process hell is paved with good intentions! Many people feel very passionately about certain pieces of a software development process, and may be quite persistent. It is easy to cave in and just add whatever makes remotely sense. As an example, code reviews makes sense. Writing a...http://www.jroller.com/matsh/entry/the_road_to_process_hell Set tab to 7 spaces!- March 17, 2006 In my project they've decided to use 3 spaces as indentation. I actually think 3 is pretty optimal; 2 is too little, 4 is a bit too much. Unfortunately it is tempting to some to set their IDE tab settings to 3 spaces, which is just wrong! Tabs should be set to 7 spaces! Why Because that will make it really clear where they are used, so they can be eliminated.http://www.jroller.com/matsh/entry/set_tag_to_7_spaces Ajax lesson: Forget Submit- March 17, 2006 Over the last 9 or so months I've looked at many Ajax examples. Hundreds. Recently it suddenly dawned on me that designing for Ajax is to some extent to forget the submit button. You still need forms to create input fields and such, but you don't need to press a submit button to pass form data to the server. It could as well be a clicking on a link, or an onchange, onblur or onkeyup, or another intrinsic event. As a test, remove the submit button from one of your forms and see what happens!...http://www.jroller.com/matsh/entry/ajax_lesson_forget_submit 12 perfect cases for Ajax- March 4, 2006 I've spent quite some time creating a 2 hour long Ajax course in Swedish. At the end of the course I list 12 cases where I think Ajax is a perfect fit, inspired by Alex Bosworth's 10 Places You Must Use Ajax, which really only has 6 cases. Well, here is my list. I know some of the cases are closely related, and some of them may be out of order when you try them out. Well, at least I'm trying! Rating, voting, yesno. In some pages, the user may cast a vote or rate things, like movies. This is.http://www.jroller.com/matsh/entry/12_perfect_cases_for_ajax I'm going to The Ajax Experience 2006, too!- March 4, 2006 It seemed a bit rediculous not to go to The Ajax Experience 2006 conference in San Francisco when it is set to go the week before JavaOne 2006, which I have already signed up for. So, I'll be in San Francisco for two weeks! I really look forward to it, but at the same time gnashing my teeth at the expenses. It would be great to meet some people!http://www.jroller.com/matsh/entry/i_m_going_to_the |
