Digital Beehive Blog

Digital Beehive Blog.

Ok, so I'm back to doing some development. Finally. - (Found July 5, 2008 )

I've been working on some dynamic web pages for the freelance computer admin repair job I've had recently. I finally broke down and set up a MySQL database and did some PHP pages. It's actually a bit of a relief to do a project for someone else that is serious enough to make me learn a bunch of new stuff. It's going on the resume, dammit. I'm not getting paid for it, but it's fun to go through the process of writing naive code that eventually starts to churn out a personal toolkit...

Creating Value - (Found July 5, 2008 )

So how do I go about creating value The development process itself is still so vague to so many people that I could comment on that and create value. But the real value is in saying something that puts all the information in context. The information itself is probably available all over the Internet. But it takes a long time to get used to it, because you really have to do it to be able to understand it. I would have to say that nowadays code itself is not the issue it used to be. There are so.

Blogged Development - (Found July 5, 2008 )

I've been considering sharing some development I'm working on, but the best form for it has me puzzled. One idea I was having was to just blog the whole thing, like a project diary, recording all my passing thoughts about what I'm doing. It might be nice, just for my own purposes, but the dynamic is different when a readership exists or might eventually exist. I've been constantly frustrated by feeling like I should edit myself lest someone steal something. The result has been that I do much...

Personal Digital Database - (Found July 5, 2008 )

My friend Mike Wilson has been talking about creating an application that is a grand unification of a variety of digital sources into one huge repository. The idea has a great deal of appeal, and is the beginning of a movement towards creating a proper structure for personal use and public viewing. The core of the idea is based on both a "home page" and web logs (blogs). Now that blogging is so common (millions of bloggers), what used to be just home pages is now a vast interconnected web of...

Software For Profit - (Found July 5, 2008 )

I have been trying to contribute a digest of my development experience to some kind of community process, but so far it has been difficult to not think in terms of a profit motive. Everything on the Internet is subject to being refactored as "free", with the occasional provider collecting some kind of fee for a "premium" version of the software. My ideas have been rooted in practical situations where a variety of problems needed to be solved together. The Open Source movement is providing the..

Hi Folks! - (Found July 5, 2008 )

After hearing about blogging for a fairly long time, I've been warming up to the idea of having something worth saying. Since it seems that the main barrier to blogging is not having said anything yet, I'm starting to write even if I have nothing substantial to say. There are lots of things going on these days that have caught my attention, and it appears that technology is going ''someplace'' very fast. I'm not sure exactly where it's headed, but it seems that new communities are...
