Google helps promote Windows XP via Infoworld - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Sadagopan's weblog oris Evers of Infoworld writes, Google's Deskbar is included in Microsoft's Partner Pack for Windows, a collection of Microsoft and third-party products released last week that Microsoft describes on its Web site as "the ultimate application package" for a Windows XP PC. The Deskbar adds a search box to the Windows taskbar, allowing users to search the Web with Google without having to start a Web browser.Joris wanted to know how Microsoft could seemingly promote Google...

On GMail and DHTML architecture again - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Koranteng Ofosu-Amaah So Jon Udell has been pondering GMail and its architecture on his blog. He's also trying to figure out when to augment DHTML apps with even richer client technology. Below follows what I thought would be a short email that I repeat here for blogospheric conversation's sake. GMail's architecture is actually very generic for a DHTML app. Everyone with a clue should be trying to leverage the browser and that, in essence, is all they are doing. I helped implement an analogous.

InfoWorld on WPS - (Found July 5, 2008 )

John Dowdell on MX Mike Heck of InfoWorld does lab tests of the Macromedia Web Publishing System and the Ektron content-management system. The first section is useful if you've been trying to get a lock on what this system does -- one way to look at it is that the WPS soups-up the use of Contribute in a group-publishing system. The big difference between Contribute and traditional CMS is that Contribute addresses a regular website with regular HTML files, while most CMS instead use a database...

Zwei kommerzielle Content-Management-Systeme im Vergleich - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Wolfgang Sommergut Die Infoworld vergleicht zwei kommerzielle Web-CMS-Lsungen.

Yahoo Acquires Search-Based Email Company - (Found July 5, 2008 )

SNT Report Yahoo has quietly purchased e-mail software company Stata Labs, in what could be an investment in a coming PC search tool to rival Google and Microsoft. Stata Labs, a privately held company based in San Mateo, Calif., sells an e-mail application called Bloomba that lets people search message text and attachments. Yahoo apparently bought the underlying technology of Stata Labs and does not intend to continue sales of Bloomba.

Microsoft more vague about Exchange road map - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Ed Brill I'm sure this will show up in one of IDG's US publications later today (Infoworld, Network World, Computerworld etc): "Microsoft in May said it would deliver in 2005 an addition to Exchange called Edge Services, an intelligent message transfer agent for the edge of a company's network that offers security, spam and virus protection. The software maker is now backpedaling on that commitment, which was the only announced release for Exchange beyond 2004. 'We remain very committed to Edge.

AOL survey uncovers rampant online threats - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Neowin.net A survey conducted by Internet service provider America Online found that 20 percent of home computers were infected by a virus or worm, and that various forms of snooping programs such as spyware and adware are on a whopping 80 percent of systems. Despite that, more than two thirds of home users think they are safe from online threats. The survey of home computers and their owners reveals a gap between users' perceptions and the prevalence actual threats on the Internet. That gap...

Reliability and Security - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Musings from Adam Shostack "However, Engler thinks the security explanation should be taken with a grain of salt. His research in the late 1990s aimed to improve the reliability of software. Security analysis was part of the story, he says, but "basically, we just didnt want stuff to crash." (writes Jon Udell in Infoworld.) But Crispin Cowan has a different take, which is that while related, reliability techniques don't always work for security. That's because random faults can be addressed by..
