Designing and Analyzing - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Patrick Logan's weblog Jon Udell on source code analysis writes... "TDD (test-driven development) is one increasingly popular approach to finding bugs." Analysis is taking things apart. Design is putting things together. The tools described by Jon for automated analysis are fine. But TDD is an approach for developers putting things together in such a way as they need less analysis later. Jon is misleading readers by putting TDD in the same category as automated analysis. TDD prevents bugs...

Native XML support in ECMAScript (E4X) - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Shane Dempsey Yet another interesting nugget of information pulled from Jon Udell's site. Makes you wonder how many bloggers are merely human blog aggregators of other people's blogs. Eventually there's 1 part content and O(nn) level of repetition, like P2P only worse as info is wrapped with 'opinion' by each subsequent blogger. There's a study that could be done here using a combination of the google API and bloglines. Blog information is distributed virally Discuss... E4X is native data type..

Proxim Follows Alvarion Lead on Calling New Hardware Pre-WiMax - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Glenn Fleishman's Wi-Fi Networking News Proxim's latest point-to-multipoint hardware, the Tsunami MP.11 Model 5054-R is an interim stage on the road to full WiMax compliance: As Alvarion said back in June, so, too, Proxim is riding the WiMax name wave while providing a product platform they say is committed to future compliance when a standard for certification is finalized. Proxim has taken the additional twist of defining WiMax applications as opposed to WiMax hardware. That is, they look to..

Tech Blog 2.0 Google has fixed a security flaw in GMail, its Web-based email service, that allowed attackers to take over users email-accounts. The flaw had to do with hackers being able to steal a cookie identifying the user to gain access to their account. Macromedia plans to announce a special version of its Contribute Web publishing program designed to automate and simplify the creation of eBay online stores. The new Contribute 3 will allow users to create, update, and customize their own...

Don't Just Block Spam, Slow It Down - (Found July 5, 2008 )

TechDirt This isn't particularly new, but it looks like a number of anti-spam firms are picking up on the general concept of "gray listing" spam, where rather than just filtering spam messages, they purposely try to slow the rate at which spam messages are sent. As the blurb at Infoworld notes, this act of "meddling" feels deeply satisfying. Of course, what happens when a perfectly legitimate emailer is labeled as a spammer by such a system, and their own emails slow to a crawl It seems like...

Get the Facts on Microsoft Benchmarks - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Linux Today Now that Steve Ballmer and company have given you all the facts you need to compare Windows and Linux, allow me to add just one little tidbit. A few days ago, Ballmer published an 'executive letter' on Micrsoft's website in which he invited IT professionals to look at all the propaganda... oops, I mean facts Microsoft has assembled comparing open source and Windows platforms...

AMDZone Infoworld reports that Sun will be releasing Solaris 10 on the 15th of November, and that will include the AMD64 version. "One of the most interesting features of Solaris 10 is that it will be the first version of Solaris to support Advanced Micro Devices (Profile, Products, Articles) Inc.'s Opteron processors while running in 64-bit mode, said Dennis Clarke, director of Blastwave.org, a company in Cobourg, Ontario, that develops open source software for Solaris. Current versions of...

Microsoft Help Promotes Google Web Search - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Search Engine Watch Doing some news catch up and came across this interesting item from InfoWorld last week: Google helps promote Windows XP. It's about how Microsoft's Partner Pack For Windows is promoting the Google Deskbar. That's Google DeskBAR, which lets you search the web from any application rather than the recently released Google DeskTOP, which lets you search your computer for information. Google and Microsoft are both locked in a pretty heated battle to win the hearts and minds of...

RSS 1.0 Enclosures - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Danny Ayers Suzan Foster has a schema (announcement) for media "enclosures" with RSS 1.0 feeds. It can be used as follows: If this were the RSS 2.0: code example cut Note that the length and type are optional - you can add just as much or as little data as you like. Why might you want to use this rather than RSS 2.0s enclosure Marc Canter asks : Wheres the meta data "I wanna know whos on the recording, what are the subjects and topics of the discussion, where particular juicy quotes reside and..
