Nokia originally developed SMS to send short text messages between cell phones. Cell phones also use this technic to receive and send non-text information like graphics and ringtones. An sms ringtone can be sent to the phone via sms.

WAV ringtones - (Found July 5, 2008 )

On some cell phones like the Nokia 3650, 7650, 9210 and 9290 you can listen to any WAV file. WAV files can be downloaded or copied from PC and can contain anything - voice, music etc.

RTTTL ringtones - (Found July 5, 2008 )

RTTTL stands for Ringtone Text Transfer Language and it is a format for coding the notes of a ringtone in a universal format. With special ringtone convertor programs RTTTL ringtones can be converted to other ringtone formats and uploaded to your cell phone via datacable or a infrared connection.

Key press ringtones - (Found July 5, 2008 )

Key press ringtones can be directly entered into your phone. Its much easier to compose ringtones with the key press format compared to the composer format (phones with ringtone composer). You do not need to understand the special symbols that appear on the composer screen as a result.

Nokia composer ringtones - (Found July 5, 2008 )

The Nokia 3210 was the first Nokia phone to use the composer ringtones. Composer ringtones are also used by other cell phone manufacturers. Composer phones have a built in ringtone composer and you can compose new ringtones directly on their keyboards.

Amr sound clips - (Found July 5, 2008 )

AMR (Adaptive Multi-rate Codec) files can be recorded using the phones built-in Recorder application. This way you can record yourself saying "Mums's calling" and assing the ringtone to "mum" (Nokia 7650 allows assigning separate ringtone to each single contact as well as for each contacts group).

True tones - (Found July 5, 2008 )

True tones was launched by Nokia (2003). Many web sites also talk about True tones or Real tones when they refer to ringtones that can have extra sounds in them like singing or other strange sounds.

You can get free ringtones to your phone if you compose your own ringtones. If you have a phone with a built in ringtone composer you can also compose your own free ringtones.

MP3 ringtones - (Found July 5, 2008 )

The Beatniks audio technology can be integrated with MPEG codecs to play back MP3 files as ringtones. A clip from a real song on your mobile phone is quite cool. The BAE technology is mobile phone manufacturers such as Motorola, Siemens and Sony Ericsson. The Nokia 7650 was one of the first cell phones to play BAE or MP3 ringtones.
