FeedDemon's XSL-based Preview - August 29, 2003

One of my favorite features in FeedDemon is the way you can change the style used when previewing news items. Given my history with TopStyle you might think that this feature relies on CSS, but in fact it uses XSL to transform the RSS feed. While CSS provides control over how content is styled, XSL also enables controlling the content itself - which means that FeedDemon's preview can be extensively customized. FeedDemon 1.0 Beta 5a - August 27, 2003

FeedDemon 1.0 Beta 5a is now available. Be sure to read the release notes before installing. Among the changes is a fix that enables FeedDemon to read AOL Journal RSS feeds. As always, please post any comments about the beta in the feedemon.beta newsgroup on my news server, and be sure to include "FD 1.0 B5a" in the subject line. Now, the fact that there's a fifth beta will make some wonder just how betas there will be. The answer, of course, is "as many as it takes!" It's important to me.

FeedDemon's Graphics - August 25, 2003

Several people have complimented me on the graphics in the latest FeedDemon beta, but I can't take the credit for them. Instead, the credit goes to Cory Stann of glyFX, who also designed all the graphics for TopStyle. I'd like to publicly thank Cory and glyFX for their excellent work, since their fine graphic design skills have added a lot to my software.

ExtremeTech Reviews FeedDemon Beta - August 22, 2003

ExtremeTech just posted a review of FeedDemon based on beta 3. They gave it a higher rating than all its competitors, calling it "the Cadillac of RSS readers."

BUG: FeedDemon opens multiple IE windows - August 20, 2003

I've had several people report an ugly bug with the current FeedDemon beta that I've been unable to reproduce. The bug apparently causes an endless number of external Internet Explorer windows to be launched after clicking a link in FeedDemon. This is obviously a nasty problem, and it's something that must be fixed before FeedDemon can be released. If you've seen this bug, please post a comment here and let me know if you've found a way to consistently reproduce it.

Getting your RSS feed included in FeedDemon - August 19, 2003

Lately I've been getting a lot of requests from people asking me to include their RSS feed in FeedDemon's default set of channels. As much as I wish I could accommodate all these requests, the reality is that it's just not possible. I've tried to include a variety of feeds to familiarize new users with RSS and FeedDemon, and including too many feeds will overwhelm these same people. Localizing FeedDemon - August 8, 2003

One of my goals with FeedDemon was to enable it to be localized quite easily. Rather than use separate resource DLLs (or separate executables) for each language, I chose to store all displayed text in language-specific XML files. If you open FeedDemon's "DataLang" folder, you'll notice a subfolder named "English" which holds three XML files containing all of FeedDemon's English language strings. Localizing FeedDemon, then, becomes a matter of translating these three files into the target...
