When the ISP Met the Record Label - June 25, 2008

Ive been meaning to write up some notes from the London Calling conference which I spoke at on Friday, but Ive so busy over the last few days Ive only now found time to do it. The uber theme that permeated most discussions (on stage and off) this year was working with ISPs with debates ranging from enforcement through to new services. The BPIs chief exec Geoff Taylor and British Music Rights chief exec Fergal Sharkey both spoke at length about the intensive ongoing discussions they are having.

What next for EMI - June 17, 2008

Over the last week Ive had half a dozen different press calls about various different EMI stories, so I thought it was a good time as ever to reflect a little on the embattled label. Since Terra Firmas take over EMI has been the source of many stories ranging from the fruit and flowers excesses of the pre-acquisition days to the Next to sponsor Radiohead type speculation about new business practices. The bottom line is that EMI is one of the corner stones of a shrinking industry that is...

Why the Music Industry Can't Afford to Have Another Radio - June 13, 2008

Bill Thompsons piece on the BBC earlier this week on the BPIs education programme with Virgin Media has invoked the wrath of the BPI who put out a counter statement. What I find really interesting are the very different implications of file-sharing for TV broadcasters versus record labels. A wave of ambitious TV broadcaster online video strategies are fighting file sharing head-on by giving prime content away as soon as programmes have been broadcast via iPlayer, 4OD, ITV.Com, SkyPlayer,...

Subscriptions are Dead, Long Live Subscriptions! Musique Max First Take - June 12, 2008

French telco Orange today launches (in its home market) an unlimited PC and Mobile music subscription offering, called Musique Max (a name not entirely dissimilar to Omnifones Music Station Max). Musique Max takes a similar approach to DRM as Nokias Comes With Music will, in that it offers permanent unlimited (more on this further down) downloads on PC and mobile that do not expire when the subscription expires. The offering is being made available free for two months to subscribers to...

Step Against The Tide - June 9, 2008

In an apparently counter-zeitgeist move Warner Music have announced that theyre pulling their content from Last.FMs ad-supported on demand music service. Wired ponders whether this be part of a negotiating tactic by WMG with a view to securing an equity stake. This probably isnt too far off the money. This growing trend is not just about labels wanting to increase revenue and share in the success of new emerging platforms. (Nor is it new, taking equity stakes was standard practice for EMI...
