Winter Bison Population Estimate Released - June 28, 2008

Yellowstone National Park has completed the 2007-2008 late winter bison population estimate. The late winter population is estimated to be 3,000 bison. The estimate is based on a late winter aerial survey. It takes into account the 2007 late summer population estimate of 4,700 bison, known brucellosis risk management and hunting removals, and scientific estimates of over-winter mortality rates.

Forest Service destroyed Land Deal Records - June 28, 2008

Gallatin National Forest officials intentionally destroyed several hundred pages of records on the 1999 "Land Deal" agreement with the Church Universal and Triumphant. The Buffalo Field Campaign had sought the records under a Freedom of Information Act request. The group wanted to study the effect of the land deal on area bison herds. Montana Governor Attends Buffalo Hunt - June 28, 2008

A Montana Army National Guard, was one of those chosen for 24 bison licenses after nearly 6,200 people applied. Schweitzer congratulated him by telephone Thursday. "Hey, cowboy!" Schweitzer said from a Capitol office decorated with a bison head on the wall and a bison bronze on a desk. Then Schweitzer asked, "Are we still on" for a hunt So far, "no comment" from the governor's office.

Montana Tribes Reject "Canned Buffalo Hunt" - June 28, 2008

Montana killed most Buffalo Unnecessarily - June 28, 2008

If you consider that 1,189 Yellowstone Bison have been killed in the past three winters, this science, coming from the National Veterinary Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, the best lab in the country, indicates as many as 966 of those buffalo died without ever posing a risk to cattle.
