Through the pale door - October 29, 2007

Root canal is tomorrow. Endodontist does not provide nitrous, so I'll be on triazolam again. I'm a lot more nervous going into this than the last time. The last time I didn't know what it was. I've always considered purging memories to be somewhat analogous to suicide - absolutely unthinkable. So I find the thought of willingly taking a medicine that causes amnesia a bit scary and quite a lot distasteful. On the other hand, I also find a bit distasteful and quite a lot scary the thought of..

Tiniest Turing machine - October 25, 2007

A ridiculously small Turing machine has been proven Universal (and someone won a $25,000 prize in the process)Much of the theoretical treatment of this discovery is beyond my comprehension as I have never undertaken any studies of cellular automata. However, the important bits I grasp. And what I grasp is that this might possibly be one of the more important discoveries of the coming century, though I doubt it will see practical application for a decade or more. When we accidentally unleash..

My wallet hurts a lot more than my jaw does - October 25, 2007

I got calls from the dentist and the endodontist today. After summing the revised estimates from each, it looks like this is going to cost me about $3800 out of pocket instead of $1800 as originally thought. That number would be a whole lot less depressing if I actually had that much money. Since I don't, I get to both drain my savings account down to zero and go on a monthly financial fuckage schedule payment plan. Hurray! Another bill!

Decidedly non-awesome. I think. - October 24, 2007

Poof. Memory hole. Didn't even notice until I sat down at my computer just now and read my last post, and suddenly remembered that this was anything but an ordinary day of getting up out of bed, going to work, doing workish things, coming home, napping, reading a book.In my last post I say that my dentist told me I would not remember much from my time in his chair this afternoon. I also said, quite smugly, that I remembered it all very clearly. That was a bit premature, apparently - I can...

Damn you, fleshy soul-box, damn you for your poor workmanship. - October 24, 2007

I went in to the dentist's today to let them pipe happy gas into my lungs, poke a laser in my mouth, and zap out 75% of two of my teeth. I was willing to enter the building because I had previously popped a couple of these lovely pills prescribed for just that purpose - Triazolam. I think that triazolam may be one of my new best friends. A pity the smart pharmacist only gave me six of them. They told me I would not remember anything. Lies. The brain was too curious about how the equipment...

The most despised Truth Meme - October 24, 2007

Despite my general dislike for memes of all species, this one did sound kind of interesting. Generally I'm more interested in the questions asked than answers given, which is the only reason you see this reposted on my own LJ. You may blame madmoisellestar for spreading this particular memetic infection, which seems to be related to that most virulent childhood meme, truth or dare. Fortunately, there is no dare. Dare was defeated. The Meme----------------------------------1 question - 1...

Goodbye, dollars. - October 15, 2007

I skipped out on the latter half of work today to go to the dentist. It didn't take all that long since it turns out that there's nothing urgent to do, aside from not, you know, chewing gravel for the next week. On the 23rd I will go in, very drugged, and have that tooth and the one next to it (might as well take advantage of the visit to fix another one) reduced and get fitted for a crown and onlay. Then a few weeks later I'll have them installed. Oh joy. I've managed to fail at my goal...

In which Cassady carves pumpkins, drinks booze, and breaks a tooth. - October 15, 2007

I went to a party up at Dan's place in Hillsboro, which he was throwing to celebrate OSU's probable horrible horrible defeat in the game against Cal (Dan is a football nut.) Lots of friends, food, and alcohol. And pumpkin carving. Much fun all around... until I ate the fried rice.Matt's sister made some delicious fried rice. Unfortunately, not all of the rice grains were quite soft enough. I chomped down on one such grain of rice... and broke off a quarter of one of my top rear molars. To.

Somebody had a bad night - October 7, 2007

Tonight I watched EMTs wheel a dead body out of a house near 23rd and Monroe. At least, I assume he was dead - I don't think they wrap the living ones in white sheets. Bystanders had two theories: a) a fight that led to a stabbing; b) a fight that led to fatal beating with a beer bottle. Both bystanders were high. I put faith in neither story. Well, except for the part about there being a fight - there were six cop cars. Overdoses, accidents, and alcohol poisoning don't tend to draw so..
