Hopefully, they do not distract from the points I try to make. Gray streams are a semi-standard for extensible streams -- that is, they are not part of Common Lisp per se, but almost any implementation implements them anyway. A program needing to implement some custom stream behaviour can be expected to be reasonably portable if the programmer sticks to Gray streams. Gray streams are, thus, a Good Thing. Well, almost.
