Local stores stocking up on gluten-free products - (Found July 19, 2008 )

Sticking to a gluten-free diet - no wheat, rye or barley, in any amount - is a tough thing to do, but some local stores are doing what they can to make it easier. The Price Chopper chain is introducing a new line of gluten-free foods to its shelves, according to David Colomb, who oversees product selection. The Newington and Southington stores he called "celiac supercenters," with more extensive gluten-free selection.

Although as many as 300,000 Canadians suffer from celiac disease, many of them don&039;t know it. Celiac disease, a lifelong, genetically based disorder, occurs when gluten - a protein found in wheat, rye and barley - triggers an abnormal immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine interfering with the absorption of nutrients. Often the condition goes undiagnosed.

Student Spotlight - (Found July 19, 2008 )

Achievement: The Hritzo sisters, of Holland, placed among the top students in the world competing in this year&039;s International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta. Molly, 17, placed third in the cellular and molecular biology division. Bernadette, 15, placed fourth in zoology. More than 1,500 students from around the world competed in the fair May 10-17.
