Hamas should pay the price - (Found July 23, 2008 )

Orbach proposes that the best way to get back Israeli captive Gilad Shalit from the Hamas is to exert force. Rather than negotiating, Israel should be attacking the Hamas relentlessly. They will release Shalit when they understand that he is not a bargaining chip and not an asset, but rather a liability.

Humanizing al Qaeda, Demonizing the Bush Team - (Found July 23, 2008 )

Press sympathies can be simply perverse, says McGurn, who criticizes the media's pity for al Qaeda terrorist Omar Khadr-, he suspected killer of a US Special forces medic, even as they heap scorn on David Addington, the chief of staff to Vice President Cheney and expert on intelligence and national security issues. While the operative for al Qaeda is humanized, the counsel for the vice president is demonized, writes an incredulous McGurn, who thinks...

My Plan to Escape the Grip of Foreign Oil - (Found July 23, 2008 )

The problem, writes Pickens, is our growing dependence on foreign oil--it's extreme, it's dangerous, and it threatens the future of our nation. He wants to reduce America's foreign oil imports by more than one-third in the next five to 10 years. In 2008, the Department issued a study stating that the US has the capacity to generate 20% of its electricity supply from wind by 2030. Pickens says we can do this or even more, but we must do it quicker. His...

The Market is Responding to the Oil Shock - (Found July 23, 2008 )

Market forces may already be solving the problems of energy security and climate change as high oil prices drive a shift away from the polluting, petroleum-fueled internal combustion engine to cleaner forms of transportation. Recent cost comparisons by Deutsche Bank's auto analysts suggest electric cars will be cheaper to operate than conventional vehicles. Cost differentials could drive a quick transition to energy-efficient forms of transportation....

Stand Up And Deliver - (Found July 23, 2008 )

The most important issue that the Hokkaido summit dealt with is climate change, on which the G8 leaders agreed to a common vision of reducing by 2050 global emissions of greenhouse gases by 50 percent. Yet there is no mention of the base year from which this reduction would be measured, says Pachauri. This is clearly a flaw in the final statement, the result of which would be to create doubts on the resolve of the G8 leaders in bringing about a ...

Canada and the deserters - (Found July 23, 2008 )

McQuain comments on American deserters in Canada. He notes there is less sympathy in Canada for Iraq deserters than there were for Vietnam deserters. It has to do with the difference between a conscript military and a volunteer military. A draftee may desert because he was forced into the military in the first place, but that argument cannot be made by any member of the US Armed Forces today who voluntarily enlists.

Pak-Afghan ties victim of mistrust - (Found July 23, 2008 )

Afghanistan hurled a threat to invade Pakistan in the chase for Talibans on Pakistani soil, saying the war-torn country had a right to do so out of self-defense. It is an attempt to divert attention from the failure to enforce law and order in the country and conveniently blame the neighbor for its internal problems, says Pirzada. India and Pakistan have been trading accusations in the blame game ever since independence, but now Afghan has warned to...

Close reading the IAEA safeguards - (Found July 23, 2008 )

A careful reading of the safeguards agreement with the IAEA suggests that the truth is in the absolute middle. Both India and the IAEA have every reason to be satisfied with the final outcome. The Department of Atomic Energy must be congratulated for devising a credible framework for launching a large civilian nuclear program through global cooperation. So, says Mohan, the safeguards agreement was about translating it into a sustainable framework for...

Does the IAEA agreement hide us from the Hyde Act - (Found July 23, 2008 )

As the Iran case shows, despite that country having a legal right to the full nuclear fuel cycle, the IAEA Board of Governors referred it to the UNSC for sanctions at the insistence of the United States. The majority, including the Government of India, fell in line with the US, not because they were convinced of its legal case but because of its sheer muscle power. Here, politics is the dominant issue in interpretation, not legalese, says Purkayastha.

Al Gore's Doomsday Clock - (Found July 23, 2008 )

Stephens responds to Al Gore's speech last week in which he challenged America to run "on 100% zero-carbon electricity in 10 years." While serious people understand this is absurd, Stephens hopes other people will start drawing the same conclusion about the man proposing it. He says Gore has transformed himself into America's leading peddler of both doom and salvation and has moved beyond normal constraints and obligations of reality. Gore,...
