Is it time for a standard way to install third-party packages The Berlin Project could help ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) to provide pre-built applications for Linux without having to create countless .debs, .rpms, static tarballs and so forth. Whether or not all the major distros will unite behind it is another question though...

Planning for Mandriva 2009 - (Found July 23, 2008 )

Work is underway to define the featureset for Mandriva Linux 2009, due to be released in October. Highlights so far include faster boot time, automatic removal of unneeded packages, PackageKit integration, KDE 4, OpenOffice.org 3 and Firefox 3. See the growing wishlist here.

Wine 1.0 is finally here - (Found July 23, 2008 )

After 15 years of development, Wine 1.0 has arrived. It's been a long journey for the Windows-apps-on-Unix compatibility layer, but this 1.0 release indicates that it's stable and ready for production use. Not every Windows program is supported, but certain milestones for Microsoft Office and Adobe's apps have been met, and Windows coders can use Wine 1.0 to help port their software to Unixy platforms.

Firefox 3.0 approaching... - (Found July 23, 2008 )

The world's most popular open source browser is about to get a major upgrade. At 18:00 BST, Firefox 3 will be released, and you'll be able to grab a copy from here. New features include a much speedier JavaScript engine, new location entry box, Cairo graphics support and a 'places' system that unifies bookmarks and history.

New distro releases - (Found July 23, 2008 )

A new version of 64 Studio, the Debian-based distro for digital content creation, is now available. It includes new versions of Ardour and Rosegarden, along with many bugfixes. Meanwhile, the second beta of Debian 5.0 has been released with encrypted partitioning in the graphical installer and kernel 2.6.24.

A rough ride for X - (Found July 23, 2008 )

Phoronix reports on the release of X Server 1.4.1, noting that it has arrived over 200 days later than expected. Perhaps worryingly, the two bugs originally blocking the release haven't been fixed. The next major version of X.org was planned for February, but now has no set release date.

Acer makes bold Linux move - (Found July 23, 2008 )

Hardware vendor Acer is making a big Linux push on its laptops and desktops. The company already has Linux in store for its upcoming Eee PC rival, and has "shifted towards Linux because of Microsoft" according to a marketing exec.

Say hello to Ubuntu Netbook Remix - (Found July 23, 2008 )

While the world coos over the growing range of 'netbook' mini-laptops such as the Eee PC and MSI Wind, Canonical has been working on Ubuntu Netbook Remix, a customised version of the distro designed specifically for the new breed of small laptops. Its main feature is "a launcher that allows users to get on-line more quickly and have faster access to their favourite applications".
