A peek into the mind of Locutus as he explores the realms of possibilities that computers and related technology bring. What will technology do for us and is it good or bad?

Comment by altamir on How to install pro-engineer under linux - September 17, 2008

Hi, I have got in trouble running proe 3.0 on linux. I used Debian testing (lenny). Recently, after some updates the mechanism application stopped to work. Strangely, that in some computer with the same configuration, it works and in another it stop to work properly. When I try to change static constraints to mechanism constraint, proe crash. I got a file that debugged it: --------------------------------------------------- altamirsala15:$

pfreire 2) I've been using Windows Mobile going back to CE 2.x. Although some resets are necessary, it's usually a problem with an application that one stop, and this isn't the OS's problem. Maybe if your users are having to reboot a couple of times a day you might want to look at the memory leaks in your app. 3) Any device that is useful with useful apps is going to be more resource intensive than a stripped-down OS such as Palm OS which has no real programming model that c

Hear, hear! Welcome to the digital revolution! If it wasn't for that, it would be a digital evolution ;-) If publishers could have it their way, you'd pay a few cents every time you listened to a music, no matter how it gets to your hears (or brain, maybe...). You'd pay something else every time you read a book... or a chapter of a book ... or just a few lines. Since this isn't possible (yet), they make you pay for the media, but restrict heavily your usage and sharing rights.

1) When Microsoft enters a market, usually it isn't just "to take a slice of the pie"... They usually go for the whole thing! This is especially true for large consumer markets. As the hype goes, the mobile market is the next big thing after the PC market. IMO Microsoft wants to have a share of the mobile OS market similar to the one it has on the PC OS market... 2) Try to get a rugged mobile device for business purposes with a non-MS OS... Though you don't care about your device's OS (

Comment by Payton Byrd on The end of physical reboots with Linux. - September 16, 2008

Wow, it's nice to see GNULinux gain a feature that Microsoft provided in Windows 3.x, 9x and ME! Now, let's ask a question: Is this a good idea One advantage of a warm boot (this is the appropriate term for a reboot that does not require powering off the machine) is that it allows the BIOS to apply any security settings such as requiring a password to boot the computer. This is not insignificant! Imagine a hacker using kexec to swap the kernel of a server without having to do a reb

There are four really big reasons that using Windows Mobile is extremely significant. 1) Outlook 2) Office Mobile (Word, Excel, PPT) 3) Windows Media Player 4) .Net Compact Framework 1 & 2 speak for themselves. 3 is important for individuals who have a subscription to Napster or Rhapsody and want to play their DRM'd music from a subscription. 4 is extremely important to businesses who are building their own mobile applications because there is no easier and higher

The decision to go or not go with Windows Mobile tells a bit about what market they are trying to target with the device. Plus given the long history of working with businesses and how easy it is to connect to Exchange email it becomes much easier to get up and running. !! Thanks, I fixed that :) I can understand for IT players to be scared of microsoft (which is a sorry state of affairs IMHO) I don't think that mobile device makers should be. Microsoft is a relative newcomer to the mobile market and it doesn't have the claw hold on that market like it has with the IT market. If anything it should be news that symbian has been passed over for Linux or microsoft. Not the other way around. !! Entry Link: a href="http:it.toolbox.c

I think you actually mean the Symbian OS for mobile devices ;-) But the reason these announcements make the news is because it's very hard for major IT players to reject Microsoft's demands offerings without fear of some form of retribution. !! Entry Link: I don't care what OS my device uses.!!
