Comment on Weekly Grammaticalness: Insure vs. Ensure by Owen Lystrup - August 7, 2008

Good one, Daniel. In this case, I would call it an incorrect usage. The reason for this is only because it makes more sense to "ensure" good service rather than "insuring" it. However, you're correct to say that it could be used in either context because the meaning is a bit ambiguous. Like much of the English language -- especially when it comes to grammatical correctness and usage -- this is a case where there isn't a clear, immutable answer.

Comment on Weekly Grammaticalness: Insure vs. Ensure by Daniel - August 7, 2008

Hi there. This is 1 in google for "insure vs ensure." Here's a hair-splitter for you: A friend was taught the acronym TIPS for the service industry: To Insure Proper Service. Would this count as proper or improper grammar in your opinion One could argue that the monetary tip is a form of insurance of better service, but it is more of a "making sure" rather than a signed insurance contract.
