By: Jessica- July 17, 2008 Speaking for myself as a Christian (who was raised as an atheist), I find that giving a part of my money to people in need, whether to my church or to a charity, takes my focus off of myself and calms those "greedies" and "gimmes" in this gotta-have-it-now culture. I give what I can in the form of material goods as well as my finances and don't feel guilty about it if it doesn't equal 10%. My experience with the Bible is strictly in an academic context, but I have noticed that, in general, attempts at literal interpretations of phrasing can often be contradicted by a separate passage elsewhere.
