Comments for Teaching Applied IT & Keeping IT RealA (spasmodic) diary of the experiences and issues experienced while teaching IT in a tertiary institution. Trying to balance giving a good academic education along with vocational training that's relevant in today's workplace.Comment by dbremer on Who asks for passwords- July 28, 2008 No matter how small the internet makes this world - it's hard to overcome the fact that when many people are commenting, I'm snoozing. Graycat - I kinda like the idea of an email to the boss. Toning it down a little from "I quit" to "I'm not joe - but I'm at his desk, sitting at his logged in PC, accessing everything he has. Do you care about that" oh - yeah - "love & kisses" Grendal - yeah I think this guy works mainly at the desktop. BTW - he's just a kid and veryhttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/teach-it/who-ask... Comment by Chuck Shorter on Who asks for passwords- July 28, 2008 P.S. And it's kinda difficult to "share" your fingerprint with another user. Another point: AIX security has an administrative feature of signing on with your own accountpassword and then using a "run as" feature to mimic another user's accountprofile. Ole Goate again !! Comment by Chuck Shorter on Who asks for passwords- July 28, 2008 What's a "password" I've almost forgotten. As a former IBM employee, current retiree and stockholder with employee discounts on IBM products, I've purchased no less than six (6) IBM ThinkPads from IBMLenovo in the past 2-3 years for myself and immediate family. Three of the last four have had a "fingerprint scanner" for sign-on security. And you can register all of your other software and internet account passwords in the SecurityPassword Manager and just swipe your finger for automatic acceshttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/teach-it/who-ask... Comment by Jonathon Weaver on Who asks for passwords- July 28, 2008 Greycat - Your idea of the email works well. I also recommend setting their internet home page to Clay Aiken's website, and setting a Richard Simmons picture as the desktop background. The only problem is when you work somewhere where even the Managers dont know a lick about network security and actually yell at you for trying to inforce any password policy. Yes, I actually know people like that. Is anyone else tired about users complaining about to many passwords If they only knew hohttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/teach-it/who-ask... Comment by Graycat on Who asks for passwords- July 28, 2008 Locu - it is a weekends but that's a completely different story! :-) Grendel - I don't entirely agree with you regarding having to logon as the user to sort things. Yes, admitedly something will work as an admin but throw an issue as a restricted user (welcome to Windows, Locu!) however if you're running in a domain and are vaguely professional you would have your admin account and a separate user account for your day to day stuff. In which case you could logon as that account and trohttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/teach-it/who-ask... Comment by Grendel on Who asks for passwords- July 28, 2008 I would expect a junior technician to work mostly with end-userdesktop issues, and the post specifically refers to "user" passwords. The vast majority of the time this means Windows, and Windows frequently requires being logged in as the user in order to either troubleshoot an issue they're having, install software, etc. Many programs still require installationconfiguration under the user's specific profile in order for it to work properly (for the user) - logging in with your own administrhttp://networking.ittoolbox.com/r/rss.asp?url=http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/teach-it/who-ask...
