Comments for One In Jesus.infoBible studies and leadership advice for members of the Churches of ChristComment on The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: Nominations by Terry- September 17, 2008 It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who doesn't know where he belongs in the theological spectrum of Churches of Christ. We seem to have a hard time categorizing each other.http://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/14/the-future-of-the-progressive-churches-of-christ-nominat... Comment on The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: Nominations by Kent Benfer- September 17, 2008 Jay- I think here in the commentary we have gotten to something important. What are we really divided over anyway It's not just instrumental music. Very few churches actually practice it while there are many who would call themselves "conservatives" who believe that it is a matter of preference. For my money the debate should center around our approach to scripture, i.e. hermeneutics. Essentially what you have is two sides coming at these issues in different ways. It's no wonder they...http://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/14/the-future-of-the-progressive-churches-of-christ-nominat... Comment on MDR: Divorce in Biblical times, Part 1 by Divorce Florida- September 17, 2008 During the divorce procedure, the negative feelings that you were previously experiencing in your marriage go haywire! During this, our world appears to collapse and with it our concept of whom we are.http://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/08/mdr-divorce-in-biblical-times-part-1/#comment-8788 Comment on The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: An Open Letter to Our Leaders by Jay Guin- September 17, 2008 Todd, I entirely agree that the path to unity is not found in compromise or accommodation. I no more want to give up my freedom in Christ to be missional and worship freely than those more conservative than me want to give up their freedom to use multiple cups or hire a preacher. Until now, every one of our fights has been over whether a particular practice is an expedient or addition, faith or opinion. This made unity impossible unless both sides followed nearly identical practices. But now.http://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/11/the-future-of-the-progressive-churches-of-christ-an-open... Comment on MDR: 1 Corinthians 7, Part 4 (the Pauline Exception) by Jay Guin- September 17, 2008 Seems rather contradictory to our usual thinking, doesn't ithttp://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/15/mdr-1-corinthians-7-part-4-the-pauline-exception/#commen... Comment on Church Growth: National Trends by Jay Guin- September 17, 2008 Greg, 2,000 in average attendance. You may be right about MRCC. My knowledge of the Oklahoma churches is pretty limited.http://oneinjesus.info/2007/12/18/church-growth-national-trends/#comment-8783 Comment on The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: Nominations by Jay Guin- September 17, 2008 Anthony, You are quite right that the lines are a bit smudged. I think the second resolved might be something like: Resolved that the use of instrumental music in worship is a salvation issue. OR Resolved that the use of instrumental music in worship does not damn those who are otherwise saved, even if instrumental music is in fact contrary to God's will. The issue is, of course, vastly larger than instrumental music, but something like this would help focus the debate on the real...http://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/14/the-future-of-the-progressive-churches-of-christ-nominat... Comment on The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: Nominations by Jay Guin- September 17, 2008 Keith, I'm not sure. It could be online. It could be in an auditorium. It could be in a periodical or a book. I'm considering an internet setting, as it may create the largest audience and allow the sides to exchange and critique one another at a more thoughtful pace -- and would create a more-or-less permanent record for reading. I would think at least two separate debates. Maybe more. I'd prefer the Holy Spirit first, as I find it hard to explain grace to those who deny any active...http://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/14/the-future-of-the-progressive-churches-of-christ-nominat... Comment on The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: Nominations by Anthony- September 17, 2008 Hmmmm... Guess I have to "switch sides" as I do not consider instruments a salvation issue (not even close) but rather preference (but my preference is strong). Clearly there is a fairly wide range of beliefs within each group which complicates matters. For example, a lot of conservatives believe in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and definitely would not affirm the above proposed resolve (myself included). I think the difference between the groups regarding grace is much smaller and the..http://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/14/the-future-of-the-progressive-churches-of-christ-nominat... Comment on The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: An Open Letter to Our Leaders by Joe Baggett- September 16, 2008 Very good thought Todd. Most people are unaware that an entire generation is passing us by while we fuss and fume and fight about every little detail and this constant debating severely discredits our witness to the lost and unchurched in our communities.http://oneinjesus.info/2008/09/11/the-future-of-the-progressive-churches-of-christ-an-open... |
