I Love Verdi

Just something modest.

Rats in the cellar (and the living room) - August 31, 2008

Yesterday turned out to be quite a long day for Kirk and Michele and family: they drove 2.5 hours each way to a rat breeder to pick up their kids' new pets (named Indiana and Jones). Fancy rats are supposed to be quite smart and affectionate, and they sure are cute! We had ferrets as children, and while they were fun and hard to catch they didn't quite have the rodent agility that these squirmy little ladies have. Of course, there was time between "ratting" when the babies had to sleep,.

Most important speech of the century - August 29, 2008

If you weren't watching it live, I urge you to find online Barack Obama's nomination acceptance speech. It was eloquent, forceful, empathetic, and probably the most important speech a politician has made in recent history. In short, it was a masterful call to action. If you've never been interested in politics before, now is an appropriate time to ask yourself why. If you've never felt like a politician actually believed what he or she said, now is the time to pay attention. If you vote...

Ciao - August 27, 2008

Today we had a lunch to celebrate (or perhaps mourn) Brian's resignation. He's taking his chance to finish up his PhD, eighteen months of study and research. He will certainly be missed around the office, and he takes with him quite a bit of knowledge, leadership, and optimism. Luckily he's not leaving the area, so we will definitely keep in touch with him and his family. It was a pleasure working with you, Brian! Hopefully one day you will decide to return.

Absolute truth - August 27, 2008

I stand corrected: my statement that absolute truth cannot exist is false. There is nothing inconsistent with the theorem that it can exist, as far as I can tell.An absolute truth would be a statement A such that for any statement B:(B - A) - BThen,B - (B - A)B - (B or A)B - (B and A)B - B and B - AB - ASeems simple enough- no self-contradictions. So, an absolutely true statement, as far as I can tell, can exist given the normal logical axioms. Of course, correct my logic if I'm wrong.The...

Proof of life - August 26, 2008

I believe I have solved blog spam problems. Simply use this graphic if you are, in fact, human, and this way there will be no doubt in the mind of the person moderating your comment.

Pricing - August 12, 2008

Currently I'm looking at one of these scrumptious little nuggets to replace my aging PowerMac G4. The old machine still works quite well, and is an impressive piece of technology for being close to 7 years old- but as applications become more resource intensive it has taken to chugging like an arrogant ATO pledge- especially when doing any photo processing. Not to mention the fact that the heatsink and fan have so much dust caked to them, it's not safe to blow it off in case the soot has...

Helpful - August 11, 2008

Last night Erin and I made our own sushi! Well, I wasn't allowed to hold the knife, but I did get to shout Japanese phrases of encouragement. It turns out that Clapton has a taste for sashimi himself. He's always very helpful when he wants something, and it's usually not very hard to tell what that is. Even if he's not pointing his snout at it, his eyes give away his objective:Then, when he realizes he can't get it, he sighs and resumes his rug impersonation.Of course in the end we couldn't...

I don't feel like writing - August 4, 2008

I don't know why, but I'm not feeling like writing much these days. Things are going ok: I'm playing guitar more, exercising a lot, and still taking some half-decent photographs. Maybe I'm just in need of a hiatus, or an understanding that I will update less frequently for a while.
