Combining math and medicine to treat leukemia - June 19, 2008

(Public Library of Science) Researchers have produced a mathematical model that may lead to the development of an optimally-timed vaccine for chronic myelogenous leukemia. The model takes into account the natural anti-leukemia response in patients that are treated with the drug imatinib. This approach provides insights on how to improve the treatment of leukemia patients. Details are published June 20 in the open-access journal PLoS Computational Biology.

Thinking ahead: Bacteria anticipate coming changes in their environment - June 18, 2008

(Princeton University, Engineering School) A new study by Princeton University researchers shows for the first time that bacteria don't just react to changes in their surroundings -- they anticipate and prepare for them.
