New bloodmobile "runs on Dunkin" - June 25, 2008

The American Red Cross is teaming up with Dunkin' Donuts to introduce a brand new traveling donor center to encourage people to donate blood. Dunkin' Donuts is hosting a blood drive today at its Wolf Road location in Colonie. The new bloodmobile can collect up to 30 units and 150 per week. The bloodmobile was made possible by grants from the state.

Deficit-correction tax receives no action - June 25, 2008

Colonie's bid to levy an unusual mid-year tax to reduce its multimillion-dollar deficit appeared to have died in the state Senate Tuesday when lawmakers there adjourned without ever voting on it. The so-called deficit-correction tax needed the state Legislature's blessing because town officials hoped to collect it before January, when regular property tax bills go out. Colonie may now have no choice but to wait until then.

Colonie trucking company is charged with underreporting its payroll by $2.2 million. - June 23, 2008

Eagle River was arraigned June 12 on charges that it falsified business records and committed a fraudulent practice, costing the state Insurance Fund $300,981 in lost workers' compensation premiums. According to the charges, Eagle River, of 6 Norman Drive, falsified its payroll between November 2003 and November 2006 by underreporting wages, one of the factors used in determining workers' compensation premiums. The charges are against the corporation. No charges were filed against individuals.

Baseball fields hit by vandals - June 23, 2008

Vandals went on an early morning destruction spree at the South Colonie Babe Ruth fields. Now, players and league administrators are busy cleaning up the thousands of dollars in damage. "We like to spend our money on baseballs, and baseball equipment for the kids, not on things like this," said Jeal Sutherland, Former South Colonie Baseball League President. The league is offering a $250 reward for information on whoever was responsible for the damage.
